Good morning folks. Just wanted to let everybody know about this website that has some information on trees that are listed as having historic value in Los Angeles....i know many of us love hearing about the old trees that once graced this city.

Thanks Cyndihdz, but the Arcade palm at Exposition Park is not on the list nor is the great double row of palms at the Orthopedic Hospital. I guess they don't qualify as "street trees"

Regarding the Pacific Fidelity Bldg., is there a construction date? (Assume it to have been post WW2) When visiting the BullocksW, the docent referred to the same building as having been used by Shell Oil. Was Shell a former occupant?

Pacific Fidelity is not listed at Westmoreland in '56 phone book, but several Ins. Cos. are at 621 and 630 Westmoreland. A glimpse of '60s phone books indicates 601 was Federated Dept. Stores and 616 included Chicago Title and Aviation Underwriters, but there is no Shell. For that matter, there is no "670" listed either. Guess the Fidelity Bldg., acquired a new mailing address when it eventually grew walls.

Found a tweet today from SCE with a photo gallery of mostly mid 50’s locations that you might find interesting. Some have cities named, but no addresses. Stonewood restaurant and Eden Roc (Downey) caught my eye. Looks like most are by photographer Joseph Fadler.

You know...like government built edifices & whether or not they were designed to include commercial spaces.

Here's a look at the block looking south over 38th St with Santa Fe Ave on the left. Jack Doyle's Bar is the long low narrow building on the corner. Next door to the right is the Vernon Arena and right of that the entrance to Maier Park. The original arena and the Training Camp were located in the areas immediately above the bar in the picture. Maier Park was demolished sometime in the 1930's.

I thought the large building next to Doyle's 'Thirst Emporium' might have been part of the bar as well. (not sure why I thought that)

I wonder who owned that little 'homestead' just beyond the outfield fence. (can you imagine how many balls ended up in their backyard?

I placed the camp to the right of the arena because this mentions the camp being behind Doyle's Bar and not to the side.



which made me think the boxing camp was originally located where the arena was eventually built.

(but that doesn't explain why I moved the whole camp to the right does it. [caught in the act!

I found this over the weekend as well.

At some point the Vernon Arena [2353 E. 38th St.] became known as 'DOYLE'S STAG HOTEL AND RESTAURANT'




and whatever took its place was known as the 'OLD VERNON ARENA CAFE'



pretty cool. -interesting when a name harks back to an earlier era.

The bar entrance was on Santa Fe Ave so your location for the camp might fit the "behind" description better.

I only found one other reference to Doyle's Stag Hotel.

This is fascinating stuff about Doyle’s, you guys - I’d have never figured that anything interesting would have been in boring, industrial Vernon. Bigger than downtown, but with a current population of only 113!



This stuff is doubly interesting to me as a long-time boxing fan. Man, I’d have loved to have seen the fights that went on in that arena!

I guess none of the old buildings are still left… it also looks like Santa Fe Ave might have been widened at some point…
