[Halifax] Ocean Vista (2215 Gottingen) | ? m | 20 fl | U/C

This should probably split into two separate threads.

Can't say too much, but design work on 2215 is well underway, and looks to be quite different from the Housing design. The proportions look interesting!

I ride the bus passed these sites and it looks like 2215 is fenced in and saw some equipment on site.

I split this one off and merged the 2 posts which originally were in the combined thread. This seems to make more sense since this is now a different developer and a lot of the discussion in the other thread was about the Housing Trust of NS, affordable housing, etc.

Will be interesting to see a rendering of this one. For some reason I tend to think of it as being like the other 4-8 storey storefront-sized developments on Gottingen but the limit here appears to be higher (not sure if 11 floors/33 m still applies) and the site is quite large.

Incorrect. The 2183 Gottingen parking lot (former Met store location) has now been fenced in and work seems about to start here.

The 2215 Gottingen parking lot is the on the corner of Gottingen and Prince William St, across the street (Prince William) from the YMCA.

I stand corrected! Thanks Norton97! I kind of wish it was 2215 as it is definitely a more glaring blight on Gottingen. Still good to have one of the gaps filled. I think this and 2215 are the last two big gaps on Gottingen. The Velo building lot was the most glaring years ago.

Construction permit has been issued for this site. It is listed at 21 FLOORS / 142 UNITS / $31 MILLION.

Does anyone know the specifics? This is a massive game changer for Gottingen Street.

I guess this explains why they sold off that site. Seems good that they are adding more density there instead of lowrise although it is a mystery building and could be great or terrible.

I find these dollar values suspiciously low and they make me wonder how accurate HRM building permit value figures are. Do they have an incentive to minimize that estimated value to keep taxes lower? $200k per unit is quite cheap.

I don't think so. The owner is local, and as I understand it, is not partnered with anyone.

The architect on this is Lydon Lynch.

Great news! This has been an empty lot for so long, this will be a huge improvement for the streetscape... not to mention the benefit of added density.

I hope they call it the "Misty Moon"...

Ah, the memories...I once delivered kegs of beer there, pushing them on a handcart over a very uneven gravel basement floor, dodging piles of dog crap.

Them was the days!

They had a guard dog in the basement?

So I was told, though I never saw one. I did see water and food bowls, though.

I find these old stories quite interesting, actually. Reminds me of how things were just a little more fast and loose back then, for better or worse.

I don't think I ever set foot in that building, or when the Moon was on Kempt. I did log a few hours with beer in hand at the Barrington location, though. There were quite a few good bands/artists back in the day, including a memorable Saturday afternoon session with Jeff Healey jamming with some local musicians at Secretary's (downstairs from the Moon, in the old Zeller's "bargain basement")...

Getting back to Gottingen, I recall my parents telling me that it was the place to shop for a period of time before I was born, but had become a place where you felt like you should be continually looking over your shoulder when I came of age. Now it seems to be entering a new phase... whether it be considered gentrification or renewal (maybe the same thing?), it will be nice to see big empty lots like this filled in with some increased vibrancy for the area. Cogswell redevelopment should play in well with this.

I think I was only ever in the original Moon (as a customer, I mean) twice, but I spent a LOT of time at the Kempt Road location, and saw a lot of great shows. It attracted a lot of top-level bands.

I can just remember Gottingen in the waning years of its existence as a booming shopping district. It was a very busy street with a large and eclectic selection of shops, services, theaters (Vogue and Casino) and restaurants. I have a foggy, very early recollection of eating at the French Casino restaurant, a semi-swanky place upstairs with a nice French bakery at street level, but remember better often driving past its huge, elaborate neon sign in my dad's boat of an Oldsmobile. There was a LOT of neon on Gottingen in those days.

Halifax has added 11 new civic addresses for this site. 2215-2223 Gottingen / 5450-5458 Prince William / 2284-2290 Maitland. Based on this it appears the residential main entrance will be at 2215, three commercial units along Gottingen, and eight townhouse units along Prince William and Maitland. Design standards would place the underground parking access most likely at the southern end of Maitland.

Does anyone know when construction should actually begin? The parking lot is still full everyday.
