Western North Carolina has ever borne the character of possessing some of the most delightfully romantic mountain scenery, and as healthful (a) climate as any portion of this ‘ball of mud,' and I can heartily bear witness that Asheville can boast of the most beautiful, accomplished, fascinating young ladies and the greatest proportionate number of them of any place it has ever been my pleasure to visit.

a couple favorite ny quotes:

"when you leave new york, you are astonished at how clean the rest of the world is. clean is not enough."
- fran lebowitz

"i'm so happy to be back in new york i could kiss a lamp post!"
- charles dickens observing a young man on deck on a passenger ship returning to ny harbor from europe

***

and of couple of my favorite cleveland quotes:

"it's nice to come into a town and be referred to as the manager of the cleveland indians instead of as the first black manager."
- frank robinson

"now there is something you don't see everyday, a white ghetto."
- wally shawn's remark as harvey pekar was showing him around cleveland (to be a fly in a car with just harvey pekar and wally shawn driving around in it!)

That's a good one. Also, I'm always astonished at how people outside of New York envision it to be some clean and orderly place, because it has a bunch of rich people living there.

"Oh Philadelphia Freedom, shine on me, I love you
Shine the light, through the eyes of the ones left behind
Shine the light, shine the light
Shine the light, won't you shine the light
Philadelphia Freedom, I love-ve-ve you, yes I do"

-Elton John, Philadelphia Freedom

"We're from Philly
F*cking Philly
No one likes us
And we don't care"

-Jason Kelce, Philadelphia Eagles

Here's one of my favorite recent quotes from an out-of-towner:

“You go there, and that 9-year-old kid is giving you the double finger. Not a thumbs-up. Not, ‘We’re No. 1.’ And he said something about my mom; I had to Google what it was. It’s just different. It’s a different culture. Now I see [that 9-year-old] and he’s got his 9-year-old kid with him,” Manning said, smiling. "Same deal. It runs in the families down there.”

-Eli Manning on coming to the Linc and facing the Eagles

The county gaol at Asheville, North Carolina, is about to be abandoned, on the ground that it is haunted (says the New York correspondent of the "Daily Mail.") The entire body of prisoners, numbering over two hundred, some weeks ago presented a petition to the authorities appealing for protection against the demons and evil spirits infesting the building.

The sheriff and gaoler admit the prisoners' fears are justified, they too having heard unearthly sounds and seen unholy sights.

Erie, Pennsylvania

One of Erie, Pennsylvania's most famous early residents was Horace Greeley, the famed newspaper editor and founder of the New York Tribune (the NYT of the 1840s to 1870s), founder of the Republican Party, and later presidential candidate... and who famously coined the phrase "Go West, young man". He lived in Erie from 1826 to 1831, and young Horace worked on local publications, including most notably, the Erie Gazette.

If the legendary editor incubated some of his journalistic skills in Erie, the experience did not make him overly fond of the place, and he once said – in his typically bombastic way –

"Erie is the shabbiest and most broken-down looking large town, I, an individual not wholly untraveled, ever saw in a free state…"

Not I.

(Though it's a ridiculous stretch to compare Montreal to Rome - and Toronto to Milan, TBQH - anyway.)

Hunter S. Thompson on SLC:

"Just the other day the AP wire had a story about a man from Arkansas who entered some kind of contest and won a two-week vacation--all expenses paid--wherever he wanted to go. Any place in the world: Mongolia, Easter Island, the Turkish Riviera . . . but his choice was Salt Lake City, and that's where he went. Is this man a registered voter? Has he come to grips with the issues? Has he bathed in the blood of the lamb?"

I don't think that there are any famous quotes about Seattle.

It's probably been posted before, but the most famous quote about San Francisco is, "The coldest winter I ever spent was the summer in San Francisco." -- which is true, but maybe becoming a little less true because of global warming.
