I thought it was being saved? What exactly is being preserved at this point?

The Developer's bottom line and our memories.

We'll always have this image to look at:

Just the entrance and narrow lobby. The auditorium has, sadly, mostly been demolished. An inconsequential part was to be preserved, but that comes down with the new tower design.

Old tower design preserved it, new tower design calls for remainder demolition. Only thing being left preserved is the lobby/entryway facing Chestnut which will be restored and turned into a restaurant space.

I'm assuming that the huge bit of graffiti that appeared not too long ago on the 19th street side wont be taken care of until that facade comes up on the construction schedule?

I don't understand why you're getting mad at Pearl.

1. This was always the plan from the beginning.
2. Historical commission gave the go-ahead to demolish it.

I was a bit more complicated than that, as you know.

It's great Pearl is preserving (at great expense) these trusses, I think. I have nothing but respect for Pearl.

Multiple parties over decades tried to preserve the theater and it just couldn't work. It's too bad*, but I can't fault Pearl for what they are doing.

*that theater was the last, but by no means the best of the theaters that were demolished in Center City. The real crime is that theaters like the Mastbaum, the Earle, the Erlanger, the Stanley, Fox, etc. were destroyed:

The interior was modeled after the Paris Grand Opera. You can find pieces of what's left at Holy Cross church in Springfield, Delco. My late mother seldom missed an opportunity to bemoan its demolition. It was an example of architecture that elevated the mind and heart.

The pastor at the time salvaged a bunch of marble. The altar rail, for example, is made from salvaged balcony rails.
