How can a building look so interesting from one direction, and so gawd awful from another?! Wow.

The wall of red had to be there to be able to go up to the property line. Otherwise they would have lost 10 feet. The red wall is fire rated so when somebody finally tears down that call center/data center they can build right up to the wall.

But it didn't have to be so eye-catchingly red.

They could put the effort in and make use of the space until the data centre comes down (which we have no idea when that will happen).

I think a nice mural would be be great.

Even something more subtle like a pixel pattern on the blank wall would be a big improvement.

Yes that was my point. I understand the need for a firewall, but making it as loud and eye catching and blatant as they possibly could is outrageous. This could easily have been done (ala e.g. Someone123's suggestion) in a way that was visually interesting rather than a blemish on the skyline.

I haven't looked back through the documents but I seem to recall that the original design for this building had details on the back side. I want to say it was something like the grating that is on parts of Vertu Suites with a bit of subtle colour, branding for the building and some lighting.

Funny thing is, I've been to DT Halifax quite a few times recently and have never even noticed the blank red wall (wasn't really looking for it either). Maybe it's not all that visible from most streetside locations, or maybe I just wasn't all that observant...

My point is... is it really a blight if it's only visible from elevated locales?

It's only visible on the skyline from woodside. All you see from downtown Dartmouth is Purdys and the bank towers.

A nice view down the new Sackville Corridor.

Mason was on Twitter yesterday boasting about how it was he who convinced the developer to retain the heritage building, etc etc. I hope the expanding ego does not cause his head to explode.

Keith, just because you want it to be so, does not make it so.

However it happened, I'm glad it did.

If Councillor Mason was responsible for getting it going, then he deserves accolades. If he wasn't, I'm still glad it happened this way rather than tear down and build anew. It's a nice project, blank red wall notwithstanding, and I'm glad that as much of the original building was retained, given the type of development that it is.
