I've seen that bus. In fact, I always see that bus when the next one comes in an hour.

Buses move fast there? You're lucky. Bus drivers here yell at you for not getting on fast enough then plod along at 10 miles an hour. Then they blame you for their being late!!

Hybrid bendy-bus rolls out

Winnipeg Sun | Dec. 15

This bus is set to take Winnipeggers around the city and into the future.

A cross-section of government officials combined forces yesterday to announce the arrival of Winnipeg Transit's first articulated hybrid electric bus, which will now undergo five months of testing.

"I'm ecstatic that the wheels of the diesel-electric hybrid articulated test bus have hit the streets of Winnipeg," said Mayor Sam Katz. "Once testing has been proven successful, Winnipeggers are going to see 20 of these environmentally friendly units."

Katz added those buses could be on the road as early as spring 2009.

The test bus, produced by Winnipeg-based New Flyer, is 60 feet long and able to accommodate 150 passengers. The mid-point joint gives it the turning radius of a 40-foot bus.

Funding for the transit initiative has come through Canada's Gas Tax Agreement, which will provide Manitoba with $167.3 million between 2005 and 2010.

"We are pleased to see that the City of Winnipeg is using it's federal Gas Tax and Public Transit Capital Trust funding to improve its transit services," said Treasury Board president Vic Toews, Manitoba's senior federal cabinet minister.

The province has also played a key role.

"This new bus uses cutting edge technology that will be much more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly," said provincial Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Steve Ashton.

Keep in mind that driving one of these beasts requires additional training and that takes time. Can't just put it out on the road as soon as its recieved. This test unit is going through its paces .. as are its drivers.

The city also wants to test the bus in winter conditions and to tinker with the articulation if required.

I am looking forward to seeing this enhanced transit system over the next couple years.

Into the future? Other cities have had buses like these for decades. Maybe in 2009 Winnipeg will finally reach the 1980s.

I don't recall any electric-hybred busses in the 80's. Newflyer industries has only been making them for a couple years.

So I'm guessing that once that we get a full fleet of articulated buses, they're going to be mostly placed onto the super-express routes such as the University Super-Express and 60 Pembina, no?

He's ecstatic??? These buses have been around in Italy since 10 years (actually not diesel-electric hybrids but 100% natural gas buses).

There are a couple runs of the 32 that could definitely stand a larger bus. On the way home on the Riverbend 32 leaving downtown at 4:45 it is probably almost once a week that the driver has to turn people away at McDermot and/or the Concert Hall because the bus is full.

Indeed, except I take the 18/32 from my house to RRC Princess Campus. It would be nice if the 32 gets the Artic buses, but I can see that the UofM bound buses gets them first.

Don't hold your breath. I'll be really surprised if this test works out--articulated buses are a disaster in winter.

...which is why you can't just plunk them down on the roads and drive away like you can in a place like Italy. Same with all those rapid transit cars. They would all need to be redesigned for Winnipeg winters. It's expensive, particularly for the very small volumes that would be required for a small city like Winnipeg.
