I fear what those students are going to do to those units though.. if anyone has ever seen the interior of a group home you know that sometimes they have to gut the entire thing because of how they treat it..

That's the nature of student housing. It's unfortunate, but maybe the property managers will ensure the rooms stay in relatively good shape.

...*raises eyebrow*...

unless mac or the city is going to be personally responsible for that...

I think they should have routine checks to ensure they are properly caring for their units - I know we have those where I live.

It's separate from Mac. They will have a property management company oversee the building. I'm sure they'll go with a good company.

I would love to share them, but I can't. I'm sure they'll be out there soon enough though.

It is an excellent development. And it will certainly be a tremendous economic boon to the downtown with loads of students with disposable income running about and visiting pubs, bars, restos.

There is precedent for this, though. LIUNA didn't invent the concept. Laurier was extremely prescient by opening a downtown campus in Brantford. It has transformed the city's core by virtue of the simple fact that more people living, working, and playing there adds wealth to the core.

Again, this is great for Hamilton, and I can't wait for its completion.

No one said LIUNA invented the concept. The same thing exists in college cities around North America...

them being in the location they are in means that the eatons addition might finally get to actually be used for something useful again, as it's literally across the street, and so you know they are going to be pouring into there - if the city is smart they will plan ahead for this..

..and also plan ahead that that many students in one spot will probably increase the chances of vandalism and other drunk hooliganry..

I wonder if we'll see a shift of students moving out of the Crown Plaza / Homewood Suites now that more purpose built student rental units are being built in the core.

I know Columbia College has several students living on the upper floors of Crown Plaza. Is this building available to rent to Columbia students? Or just Mohawk/McMaster

My good friend is one of the managers at the Crown Plaza. She says a lot of the students have moved to the Connaught and some of the others are looking to move here once completed.
