I guess Camilien Houde was kind of a legend in his days. He was a member of parliament in both Ottawa and Quebec City. And 4 time Montreal Mayor. During WW2 he was interned in a concentration camp.
Quote:
When World War II came, Houde then campaigned against conscription.
On 2 August 1940, Houde publicly urged the men of Quebec to ignore the national registration measure introduced by the federal government.[3] Three days later, he was placed under arrest by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on charges of sedition, and then confined without trial[4] in internment camps in Petawawa, Ontario and Ripples, New Brunswick until 1944. Upon his release on 18 August 1944, he was greeted by a cheering crowd of 50,000 Montrealers,[5] and won back his job as Montreal mayor in 1944's civic election.
Montreal and Toronto: probably the only two cities in Canada that I would be thrilled to visit in their 1940s/50s/60s incarnations.

Place d'Arts was a fantastic addition to the city, but what a loss this department store was. They were all grand back then, but this one was spectacular.
there is no appropriate superlative for Rico's great post!

This one hurts, Especially when you compare it to its replacement, the Maisonneuve theatre. It's a fine theatre, and I actually think it's a decent example of 70's brutalism, but yeah.
Love the trips down memory lane (well, I am getting old, even if I am not quite as old as most photos). The bustle of those old days and all the people enjoying their smokes makes me long for a cigarette. (I quit 16 years ago).
one thing was worse back then: Place Jacques Cartier as a parking lot.
