This one ticks a lot of boxes. Ugly Milton crapitude to your left and behind you, the wonders of the hollowed out Milton core in front of you which is sure to disappoint and then the sameness of an Esso gas station at your service.

Seems like the right time to post the greatest gas station that Canada ever had and ever will see... the Mies Esso station in Montreal:

If a gas station could ever move you to tears with its austere beauty, it's this one. Is it still there?

The most notable in Vancouver are the '200' that have been closed over the last decade. If you are downtown your choices are getting pretty slim.

My favourite is a single pump built into a car size pull-out alcove carved out of a building in Milan. This is not uncommon in Europe. I will look for a photo. I can see us getting this scale of infrastructure once electric takes off.

This was there when I lived in Montréal. Its beautiful. Mies had a thing for Montréal . . . or was it just Phyllis?

We've one left downtown, but we've been down to just one for decades now. It was Ultramar until very recently.

Our biggest is, I assume, Costco in Galway.

And my fave, of course, are the local North Atlantic ones - they're just so cheerful. I believe they're also now owned by Irving, but with a commitment to maintain the local branding, similar to previous arrangements with Loblaws (locally Dominion), and Molson/Labatt (locally Dominion, India, Jockey Club, Blackhorse, Blue Star, etc.).

There's also Esso (generally with a Tim's) and, I think only one, Shell (with a Needs Convenience).

Some that I recall as being in unique/tight locations.

https://goo.gl/maps/UhXv2vyjUwmFqi2j9 gas pumps/BMW dealership/apartments above as part of the soccer stadium for FC Monaco.

https://goo.gl/maps/wPmPHgJPyGzqwV2g9 hmmm..I bet the fumes for a gas station within an underground parking garage are just lovely

https://goo.gl/maps/gWurbBSLxc9K5qZ69 I remember this fairly minimalist one in Paris..no canopy above the pumps, no double drive-thru lane of F150's idling waiting for lukewarm beige water allegedly called coffee here.

https://goo.gl/maps/c3XvzoY52nXV6Mis8 Probably the nicest one near me. It doesn't show the prices and it is full serve only which should give you a clue that it is expensive.

It is still there as it is a protected heritage building I am pretty sure. No longer a gas station though. Now a community centre for seniors or something like that I think.

When the Canadian Museum of Civilization (now History) was built in Gatineau (Hull), Petro-Canada hired the museum's architect, Douglas Cardinal, to design a gas station across the street.

It was a Petro-Can for a number of years, but then the station closed. It's been a number of other things over the years: an MRI clinic, a sales office for builder Brigil, a local sports museum...

The price you pay for living in Paris I guess. I have a cousin who lives in the outskirts of Paris and when he came here for a visit he couldn't believe how cheap gas was and how quickly the price can change literally on an hourly basis.

I recall that gas was expensive in Monaco..surprise, surprise. Driving there is fun.

I've met his son and know people who worked with Douglas and I would think he would be a difficult architect to work with.

The gas station by Mies Van Der Rohe still exists and is protected. It is call La Station now and serves as a community center.

In recent weeks, they've been renovating a former gas station on the east side of Ottawa (Montreal Rd at St Laurent). When the cladding came off, I was surprised to see the intact white and green tiles and logo of an old Cities Service gas station. I've seen bits and pieces of the tile at other locations (Cities Service had a lot of stations, at least in Ontario), but this one was complete for the top half of the structure. It has since been covered up again, to await another reveal in a few decades time.

Anybody else remember Cities Service? I know they became CITGO in the USA, which was bought by Venezuela (!), but I don't know if they still exist in any identity in Canada.

Gas in france isn't typically $3/l from my understanding, more like $2.00 across mainland Europe. That little station is probably charging a large "convenience" fee. I recall paying about €1.30 in Ireland for gas last spring, and gas being €1.20-1.30 in France a few summers before that. That's still pricey, even in the little subcompact rental we had. It was costing me just as much to fill that little car up as it does to fill up my terrible on gas SUV in Canada.

Toronto has this historic 1920's fuel station on the waterfront which the City has restored... but doesn't know what to do with. So it sits fenced up.

And the former gas station across the street (built by P.E. Trudeau's father in 1934) that looks like a Disney Land utility shed has a heritage designation.

I know I'm cheating because this isn't in Canada but I just loved the name of this place. (Savannah Georgia)
