Agreed, Valmond's building is quite nice, and I really like the stone cladding that they are using on the first floor. I have no issues with the quality of construction, it would just have been nicer if the building had been 6-8 floors rather than only four.

Oh well, maybe the second building on this site will be talller (hint, hint).

Finally, exciting development on East Main by Valmond.

Quote:
Development slated for east Main area

By James Foster Times & Transcript Staff

26 Apr 2012 03:36PM

Coming soon to the east end of Main Street: the Harper Building.

Developer Valmond Robichaud says construction is about to begin on a new 10-storey building at the northwest corner of Harper Street and Main Street that will be comprised of two floors of office space and eight floors of condominiums and apartments.

“The site includes two floors of 40,000 square feet of office space, underground parking and eight floors of condo apartments,” Robichaud says.

“The Harper Building Inc. is anticipating leasing this office space to the federal government as (The Harper Building Inc., with Sorel Investments Inc.) are the lowest bidder.”

Robichaud says construction will begin “very soon.”
To continue reading, I would assume it will be in tomorrow Times & Transcript as it just went up this afternoon.

I would put the photo up, but not sure how. The article also states that the development will provide underground parking for 125 vehicles.

Hmmmm. 40,000 sq ft of office space - Isn't that the exact amount of space that the feds are looking for? Maybe that's why he's calling it the "Harper Building" (just kidding)

Things are really humming along right now development wise in downtown! 10 stories will make a big impact on the skyline.

AWESOME!!

So glad to hear this project is a go! I'm really hoping they use one of the designs that Architecture 2000 made...In particular the oval shaped one...Mattyyy can you verify if the design looks anything like the ones on this site:

http://www.architecture2000.ca/2009/...street-condos/

EDIT: David beat me to it...that is my favorite design...however it was the most expensive version that they came up with, so I wont hold my breath for that one.

None of those designs are the one used by the Transcript today. It is more rectangular with a bigger podium.

I concur. I've certainly done this in the past and it turns out pretty well most of the time.

Any takers out there?

Well the Harper building has definitively been dulled down quite a bit compared to what was originally shown. Still, the shear number of projects in the downtown is impressive, especially considering that the bulk of these projects were all announced or restarted in the past few weeks.

...MonctonRad, I think that Killam project is 7 stories

I just wonder why the developer chose to cop out on design like that? I wonder if the original design was going to be too expensive to build?

Well as I expected Valmond went with a more economical design (those original renderings seemed more like "ideas" than real proposals...judging from how many options were presented).

That said I do like the design overall, its not close to the glass oval design, but in and of its self it will be clad with high quality materials, plenty of glass and stone...it will have a nice glassed in street front...and it will have a significant impact on the density of that area. Now Chateau Moncton will have a buddy

It will serve to clean up a large block of vacant land right on Main street which has been an eyesore for years. And hopefully will spur on the development of the surrounding lots. This is a great addition to the "growing up" of east main...first Chateau Moncton, then the Marriott, the new CIBC and now this.

At the end of the day it will be a 10 story addition to downtown...something Moncton (and for that matter NB) hasn't seen for many years...and for that I applaud Mr. Robichaud!
