Welp, looks like they've officially given up on reusing the former Sears.

Is Devonshire doing well overall?

When I was young, and we'd visit my grandparents who lived in Riverside, there was usually a trip to that mall. My parents would quite often see other people their age who they knew from school and were also "home" for whatever occasion it was.

Though my grandparents were closer to Tecumseh Mall and frequented it more often, Devonshire was always a stop, even when I was an "adult" visiting the family on my own.

Devonshire Mall is still doing well, only a handful of empty stores and always new ones opening up. It the premier regional mall this side of London, so its buffered from some of the challenges that smaller local malls are suffering from.

Bout time. Sounds like they're doing some renovations and adding a few more stores too. That wing of the mall has always been the quietest.

Good.

I haven't been in it in about 15 years, but I recall how much it had changed from when I was just a kid in the 70s and 80s.

It looks so much nicer and more modern since they did a $70M renovation around 2017 or so. Also, I’ve read that they have had a lot of retailers interested lately about the Prospects of moving into the mall with the Sears redevelopment, because of the very good sales volumes that many of the current stores have experienced.

They've done a good job of keeping it updated. It's probably one of the healthier malls in the country right now. It's quite a bit bigger than both the malls in London and it has a big catchment area to draw from (all the way to Chatham). It also draws from Michigan, especially these days when the exchange rate favours it.

Quite amazing to me that they built the new food court and expansion where they did at Devonshire while the Sears property was empty. That wing would’ve been the perfect area for what they built. Lots of space, where they built it is very crammed and creates the illusion the Mall was low on space. Anyway, I hope something useful is built where the Sears was. Residential tower or really anything.

They rebuilt the food court in 2016/17 but Sears didn't close until 2018.

Apologies, I thought the Food Court was done 2019. Makes sense in that case.

Tecumseh Mall is the mall that is a shadow of its former self. 🫤

That mall was never really a big player but it was definitely busier when it had Zellers as an anchor (and before that K-Mart). In the last 10 years it has gained Marshalls, Home Sense, and Giant Tiger though. Plus, a new Michael's is opening soon. All of the new apartment buildings planned for nearby will help.

I wonder if the owners of Tecumseh Mall are still planning to build those condo towers on the property going back a few years ago.

Good to hear there is some movement on Residential projects. I noticed they cleared the area at the southwestern corner of Banwell and McHugh, preparing for the new residential projects on that end of town.

I too noticed the preliminary work out on Banwell and McHugh. Good to see that moving forward.
No sign of activity yet at any of the Riverside drive projects (Janet street or the old Danny's Tavern site)
They have fenced off the parcel of land behind the old Princess Auto off Lauzon Parkway.
Baird AE has their sign up there as well.

I'm sure its mandatory study work being done ahead of time, but there has been activity at the site of the new Hospital out at County Road 42 and 9th Concession. Soil samples or archeological work or something along those line.

It’s good to see that they’re moving forward with the suburban projects, things seemed stagnant for a while. Would be nice to see some core projects moving forward. Lots of proposals over the last few years with no shovels in the ground yet.

Is the land where Abars used to be planned to become anything?

My mother's family apparently owned a waterfront property decades ago, but on the Lake St. Clair shore. It was sold at some point in the 1960s or '70s.

Land where Abars used to stand is owned by the Moroun family who believed it had potential for a second bridge to the US. I've heard chatter that the City wants to buy the land but so far they don't want to sell. (There's a better chance of me hitting the 6/49 52 weeks in a row than there is of a bridge being built there but leverage...)
