This building is so incredibly exciting. In fact, in the 12 years I have been following skyscraper construction, I think this officially takes the cake as THE most exciting project yet IMO (previous holder was 111 W 57th)

In many ways this feels like NYC is finally getting a completed Met Life North tower, in terms of height, design, and overall skyline impact.

I’d gladly take 1,486, but I otherwise agree with you. This warrants Champagne!

It does sort of have that MetLife massing. I’d be just as excited if they somehow managed to get that built to original height (or talller even, given modern ceiling heights).

That figure was never a proposal. The 1,646 ft figure still may not be the exact height. If it isn’t, it’ll be very close to that. The language was changed in the final draft to give a more definitive height.

The base and the crown will be iconic.

i really don't care so much about the height.

it's all about that base.

Missed "summer streets" this year (only 2 saturdays this time?), but it's the annual look at what could be with an opening of the viaduct for public use.

I still don't think anything permanent will happen anytime soon, but at least with the new plazas at 175 Vanderbilt, more thought will come to it.

I was actually there yesterday. It’s nice to see the city’s streets filled with people — not cars.

I don't think there is anything random about the final height fluctuating by such a relatively small amount but still (barely) staying above the 1641' mark; ...bragging rights for being the first building in the western hemisphere to break 500 meters.

Yeah, I think it's pretty much the final range of the tower. The ambiguity in the language was removed in the final DEIS.

I totally agree, and said the exact same thing a couple months back (great minds think alike!):

Remember, Taipei 101 made a big splash when it broke the half kilometer mark. Grand Hyatt might be aiming for such publicity. Hopefully they really care so much about height!

But I would also posit that the MetLife North Building itself should also be completed. They would have to rebuild the original core, and do a hell of a lot of remediation, but I gander that given a roof height of 1,500 feet for the MetLife North building and perhaps the addition of a 200-foot crown and a 300-foot spire, that would be able to get the height of the MetLife North Building up above 2,000 feet. That would be the day!

Hell, yeah.

3 million square feet, and the full 1,646 ft. height. Love it!

This is the best skyscraper in America since the Sears Tower was completed in 1974.

3 million square feet and 1,646 to the top.

This would be unthinkable in 2002. Highly doubtful in 2012.

Yet here we are.

To the clouds!! The center of the world!!
