I hope a few of you who live in the area were able to make it downtown on Saturday night for the Night on Broadway event. I came down from Vegas with my family and we walked around, went into several of the open movie palaces and generally had a wonderful time. Here are a few pics, mostly of the neon.

Thanks for those pictures, ProphetM. Completely unaware of the event, I tried to do public transportation from Mid-City to the Central Library. The northbound traffic on Hill Street simply stopped at Olympic, and the bus driver suggested I get off there and walk. Which I did. I am sorry I missed these open houses, but I was so peeved about the congestion I wasn't in the proper mood

Councilman Huizar's, shall we say, omnipresence in your photos is due to his being in a bitter re-election battle with former LA County Supervisor (and before that, Councilman for the Eastside) Gloria Molina in the 9th district. The election is March 3rd.

To be fair, the event was a 7th anniversary party & showcase of Huizar's Bringing Back Broadway initiative, so having his name all over it was kind of expected. I was there due to the Route 66 connection - I'm a big Route 66 fan and this was an opportunity for the California Route 66 Association to let people know about the route's history in DTLA and help get support going for a major Route 66 event in LA that is being worked on for 2016. The original end of Route 66 was right in the middle of this event, at 7th & Broadway. That line of cars from the 1930s was there representing the CA Route 66 Association - 66 ended in DTLA in the 1920s and 30s.

My daughter took this as she was walking home today in our beautiful first-day-of-Spring weather. City Car Wash will come down next year in favor of a hotel/condo project meaning there won't be murals on the south wall of the Hotel Figueroa much longer, which is making me a little bit sad. Plus, those light wells are going to be really gloomy.

(NLA film fans may recall that this was the location of the spectacular taxi crash in 2004's neo-noir film "Collateral")

The Coliseum Bar probably predates the LA Memorial Coliseum (1921), so the name "Coliseum" is coincidental. It is a guess that when the BAR was operational, the largest venues/forums were probably in the neighborhood, downtown. Judging by the found image, the Coliseum Bar looks like it could accommodate a good number of very tall gladiators and spectators.

I found this stereoview on eBay earlier. Titled "Avenue of Palms, Los Angeles, California", it shows Palm Drive and the Longstreet Palms - a subject which has been covered many times on NLA, and in a very informative post on Los Angeles Past.

What interested me about this item was the text on the back. Below the image, I have transcribed the two paragraphs, which have a copyright date of 1904.

This part of the state, on the slope between the mountain heights and the seas, is one of the most fertile regions in the world and the climate is as nearly perfect as can be found on earth. In 1781 there were twelve families here. Just as the photograph above, it shows Watts in 1951. -but it's a different Red Car...#499 in this case. (HossC's photo shows Red Car #421)

Sheltering Palm Bar

We've visited the Ambassador Hotel time and again on NLA, yet I've never noticed this outdoor bar in any of the past photographs.

"Los Angeles" Lakehurs, 1927

I assume "Lakehurs" should read "Lakehurst" but I'm not sure where this was (assuming the Los Angeles part is accurate.)

All I know is someone doesn't know how to park their zeppelin properly.

I assume they mean that this is the dirigible USS Los Angeles, at Lakehurst, NJ.
