I hope a few of you who live in the area were able to make it downtown on Saturday night for the Night on Broadway event. I came down from Vegas with my family and we walked around, went into several of the open movie palaces and generally had a wonderful time. Here are a few pics, mostly of the neon.

Thanks for those pictures, ProphetM. Completely unaware of the event, I tried to do public transportation from Mid-City to the Central Library. The northbound traffic on Hill Street simply stopped at Olympic, and the bus driver suggested I get off there and walk. Which I did. I am sorry I missed these open houses, but I was so peeved about the congestion I wasn't in the proper mood

Councilman Huizar's, shall we say, omnipresence in your photos is due to his being in a bitter re-election battle with former LA County Supervisor (and before that, Councilman for the Eastside) Gloria Molina in the 9th district. The election is March 3rd.

To be fair, the event was a 7th anniversary party & showcase of Huizar's Bringing Back Broadway initiative, so having his name all over it was kind of expected. I was there due to the Route 66 connection - I'm a big Route 66 fan and this was an opportunity for the California Route 66 Association to let people know about the route's history in DTLA and help get support going for a major Route 66 event in LA that is being worked on for 2016. The original end of Route 66 was right in the middle of this event, at 7th & Broadway. That line of cars from the 1930s was there representing the CA Route 66 Association - 66 ended in DTLA in the 1920s and 30s.

Thank you ProphetM. Those were gorgeous.

t2, jr

My daughter took this as she was walking home today in our beautiful first-day-of-Spring weather. City Car Wash will come down next year in favor of a hotel/condo project meaning there won't be murals on the south wall of the Hotel Figueroa much longer, which is making me a little bit sad. Plus, those light wells are going to be really gloomy.

(NLA film fans may recall that this was the location of the spectacular taxi crash in 2004's neo-noir film "Collateral")

Why do you think it was called the Coliseum Bar when it was located way over on 4th Street?

__

The Coliseum Bar probably predates the LA Memorial Coliseum (1921), so the name "Coliseum" is coincidental. It is a guess that when the BAR was operational, the largest venues/forums were probably in the neighborhood, downtown. Judging by the found image, the Coliseum Bar looks like it could accommodate a good number of very tall gladiators and spectators.

What great pictures of the Night on Broadway event, ProphetM. Thanks for sharing them.

Is it just me, or are they a bit colorful? That's better .

1930s? 1940? Whatever the date, it makes me thirsty.

Wondering why the guide above has an ad for a restaurant (Fred Solari's Grill) in San Francisco?
_____

Never heard of some of those organizations, like the Zonta Club. Looks like they're
still going strong, though, after a quick internet search.

Zonta International
A worldwide organization of executives in business and the
professions working together to advance the status of women.
www.zonta.org
_____

And the Soroptimist Club?

Soroptimist:
The name Soroptimist was coined from the Latin soror meaning sister, and
optima meaning best. Soroptimist is perhaps best interpreted as 'the best for
women'.

I found this stereoview on eBay earlier. Titled "Avenue of Palms, Los Angeles, California", it shows Palm Drive and the Longstreet Palms - a subject which has been covered many times on NLA, and in a very informative post on Los Angeles Past.

eBay

What interested me about this item was the text on the back. Below the image, I have transcribed the two paragraphs, which have a copyright date of 1904.

eBay

"You are in southern California, 600 miles S. E. from San Francisco and seventeen miles inland from the Pacific seashore. This part of the state, on the slope between the mountain heights and the seas, is one of the most fertile regions in the world and the climate is as nearly perfect as can be found on earth. In 1781 there were twelve families here. Today over 175,000 people have their homes here and thousands of tourists besides are continually coming and going, especially through the winter when a street like this, lined with feathery palms and fragrant roses, offers the greatest possible contrast to the bare and chilly bleakness of other parts of the United States.

Almost the whole growth of this beautiful town has come within the memory of middle-aged men so it has the advantage of beginning on modern lines, with all the best up-to-date ideas about house-building, sanitation, street-lighting, provisions for schools, for rapid transit and for public parks. Its streets were laid out with intelligent regard both for practical service and for artistic effect; the result is that you find here one of the pleasantest spots in America. Los Angeles is a prosperous business centre. Some of the owners of these cosy homes brought their money with them - some have made it since they came. There is a good deal of wealth here but still more of modest, substantial prosperity: the sort that means assured comfort in the present and that gives a good, sound basis on which to rear California's coming generations of men and women.

From Descriptive Bulletin No. 1, copyrighted, 1904, by Underwood & Underwood."

I found this companion photograph last night.

Just as the photograph above, it shows Watts in 1951. -but it's a different Red Car...#499 in this case. (HossC's photo shows Red Car #421)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Los-Angeles-...item4ae41eefc1

below: a slightly larger detail for a better look at the stores on the left.

I can't quite make out what it says before 'drugs'. Is it 'Haigh'...the same store in HossC's photograph? The building looks different though.

Sheltering Palm Bar

We've visited the Ambassador Hotel time and again on NLA, yet I've never noticed this outdoor bar in any of the past photographs.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Los-Angeles-...item58be02684e

I'll have to go back and take a good look at some of the photographs of the pool area.

We've seen similar before, but this was in the ad
section of an Earl Carroll Theatre program from 1939.

"Los Angeles" Lakehurs, 1927 ???

This photo was labeled:

"Los Angeles" Lakehurs, 1927

I assume "Lakehurs" should read "Lakehurst" but I'm not sure where this was (assuming the Los Angeles part is accurate.)

All I know is someone doesn't know how to park their zeppelin properly.

I assume they mean that this is the dirigible USS Los Angeles, at Lakehurst, NJ.
