Canmore is approaching 20,000 population. The highway you see (part of the Trans Canada) leads to Banff and backwards to Calgary. Canmore is quite close to both. There is some resource industry nearby. The town relies primarily on tourism, and residential development (for Calgary commuters, retirees, lifestyle hunters). It hosted some events for the 88 Olympics and is surrounded by trail networks (mountain biking, hiking, skiing) downhill ski resorts (3 or 4), the Rocky Mountains and foothills recreation areas, etc.. It is also a service industry centre for the region. It used to be quite small and only served Banff and the highway (services, gas stations, motels, etc.). It has become a destination of its own. The natural setting is stunning, the restaurants and accommodations have developed/improved significantly. Its small downtown is quite a nice spot to spend some time after a day in the mountains. IMO, it equals Banff townsite.
