The patio in front could make great restaurant out door space.

At least, I don't think it is.

It should have at least hugged the sidewalk, and dealt with the grade change. The elevated, empty plinth in front does nothing for it, or for the street. If the design review committee does its job, they should require better interaction with the public realm.
That setback from the street is indeed awkward. Not sure how to solve it, but it is definitely my biggest beef (aside from the fact I wish it was taller). The colour scheme is a touch odd, but on balance I do like that they are striving for some colour given that end of town is awash in beige brick.

Wow, this is amazing. Can this be done with all development sites?

I really like this building. Yeah, the front is a little awkward, but how do you deal with a grade change like that? The Citadel Hotel isn't doing it any better.

Looks like some other newer buildings around town:

Staggered windows like the new Dal mixed use building on LeMarchant
Coloured glass like the Vic
And a slanted roof like the Vic and the taller brick building near the Macdonald Bridge

Did anyone make it to the DRC meeting? Neither of the business news sources mentioned if this was approved/rejected/deferred.

This one's approved. Site prep is set to start soon, and construction will be in full swing by the summer.

^Good to hear. This will start construction just in time to keep an active construction site on the block for at least another year.

Excellent - may only be a mid-rise, but mid is better than none in my books.

It's going to be a night-and-day difference for this area over the next couple of years with all the new buildings and the new retail spaces for the apartments on Brunswick. It's great because this was a particularly bleak stretch and it ties together Cogswell and Gottingen. I think downtown Halifax will be healthier and more interesting if the pedestrian-friendly parts extend all the way from Spring Garden Road through Barrington and north to Gottingen.

Hopefully it won't be too long before we hear something about the lot behind Staples on the corner of Brunswick and Cogswell. This was delayed for Fenwick, but now Fenwick is behind schedule..

Consider this blogged.

All photos I take of this project will be tagged with #5445Rainnie and will be available via The Halifax Developments Blog. For site specific photos click here.

I think that might just be storage for all the work happening on Rainie Dr right now. Hopefully though that work will lead to a start on this project.

It's better known as 1595 Barrington (the Discovery Centre building).

Just to clarify Jonovision was correct and the current work on site is related to the municipal project on Rannie Drive. That said though an unnamed source has stated construction on this project is imminent and they are currently working on the R.O.W. permits.

Have there been any new renderings? I recall Waye mentioning a new design would be coming out soon.
