The Portland at 444-1/2 S. Spring Street

Does anyone have anything on the Portland Boarding House so that my correspondent can live a happier and more complete life?

It's not entirely clear to me, but it appears 444-1/2 is in 446-450 S. Spring, rather than in 442-444, on the
1906 Sanborn Map below. Please note the Barker Bros. building at far right (north is also on the right):

Here are some of the the buildings on the 1906 Sanborn, from Barker Bros. south. We're looking north on Spring
from 5th, c. 1903. Was the Portland in the building at far right with the bay windows (446-450), or was it in the
building to the north with the flat windows (442-444)? Perhaps the Portland comprised the upper floors of both
buildings:

USC has a zoomable version (dated c. 1905) of the previous photo. This is a closer view of the lower right corner;
look in the middle above the woman on the bike ("444 1/2 - The Portland - Furnished Rooms"):

CHS-6725 at USCDL

This is roughly the same view from 1939. It appears that 446 through 452 S. Spring from the 1906 Sanborn
have been torn down and replaced with the parking lot south of the Bette Davis billboard. There is also a
parking lot between the Delta Bldg. (426) and 438-440 S. Spring:

DW-B5-53-39 at USCDL

Those same two buildings flanked by parking lots in the 1939 photo above are still flanked by them on the
1950 Sanborn. Have we discussed that tunnel to the Alexandria Hotel at upper left?:

It looks like the Christmas photo I picked out may come from the same set as the second that Martin Pal posted above, although the sources and dates differ.

1920 - Bathers sit on the sand with a "blow-up" alligator on their laps as they open presents in front of the Christmas tree on a beach in Long Beach.

Happy Christmas to everyone on NLA.

Images restored

I just finished fixing the broken image links in my old posts that resulted from Photobucket's betrayal of its userbase this past year. All of my files now reside safe and sound on my own private hosting.

The updates don't affect the old links that were quoted in other people's posts, of course, but at least my original contributions here have been restored.

I thought it would be a tedious task, but I actually enjoyed it. It reminded me of all the fun I had on this thread back in the early days.

A million thanks, Flyingwedge--I'm sure my correspondent will be more than delighted!

Merry Christmas to all! And to all a, um, good morning!

Thanks for letting us know our mystery 'building' is STILL STANDING Lomara.

I can't believe we forgot to check the area to see if it was still standing.

If Photobucket wanted to end 3rd Party linkage they could have just stopped it [and let the previous pics remain.]. But no, they made a vicous and very unethical decision to double-cross and back-stab millions of their customers by simply making millions of customer's photos go black. If you want PB to 3rd party link...it'll now cost you $400 per year. From free to $400 a year.

This is how Photobucket lied to people for ten years or more.

Someday I hope to do as our Los Angeles Past has bravely done and restore all my pix postings lost due to the Photobucket debacle. Well done, LAP!

My correspondent is enthusiastically appreciative about what Flyingwedge supplied on the Portland. He (my correspondent) mentions to me some most interesting information about the place which I'll share, if he accedes to my request to do so . . .

And I take advantage of the opportunity to add a timely image which is Angeleno only in the warmth of its wishes to NLAers:

Thanks, HossC!

Nice find, that does look like the same location...the posts on the beach etc. Maybe they did something similar every year, hence the different dates.

I know we've seen this one before, but I enjoy it:

A team of reindeer pulls a loaded sleigh across the sky in this night view
of Wilshire Boulevard looking east at Burnside. A neon sign for the Bank
of America is visible as well as the El Rey Theater on the far left, and the
Wilshire Tower (Desmond’s building) on the right. Photograph circa 1937,

mystery location

"1930 Vintage Photo Los Angeles Athletic Club gymnast does handstand over skyline"

ebay

does this area look familiar to anyone?

full size to see all the details

ebay

note the small stand with the large awning on the sidewalk below (down and to the left of the gymnast's right hand)

To me, this has the feel of East Los Angeles (perhaps looking northwest?)

for search purposes: Lo Angeles Athletic Club - A.A.U. Gymnastic Championships - Norman Parrish

as a reminder, the Los Angeles Athletic Club is downtown at 431 W. 7th St.
