Slightly OT Edmonton Post. Lunch? Dinner?

Sorry if this is too OT for people.

Hey folks, Calgary guy up here enjoying the most excellent DYNAMIC and vibrant Edmonton this w/e on a business trip.

I'm staying at the Mariott Courtyard next to the Laurier, and need some lunch in the next half-hour, and then some dinner this evening before the Red Arrow whisks me back south to the real city of champions. Red Arrow leaves from the Holiday Inn Express downtown, so dinner and lunch both have to be downtown.

Off to the museum and art gallery between lunch and dinner.

Any suggestions for lunch and/or dinner?

Thanks,
-T

Blue plate on 104 street between Jasper and 102 ave is one of my favorites.

Wow - thanks!

I'm off to the blue plate for lunch now.

I'll figure out dinner when I get there ;-)

given this is such a lovely spring day in the province's capital , you might want to try the hardware grill on jasper and 97th street, madison's in the union bank at jasper and 101a st, or the harvest room in the hotel macdonald (not the laurier which is in quebec city ), all of which are within easy walking distance (not sure about sunday evening hours so you may want to call first)... now i have to go shovel the walks again.

If you want some Neapolitan style pizza, try Famoso on 117 St and Jasper.

^ Free press is good. However, have they replaced their carpets? Everytime I went there, I felt like I had to take my shoes off :|

Hey - thanks for all the tips.

Just writing a longer reply from the wifi of The Red Arrow - my fingers are too tired to do this on my Pearl.

The Free Press is a favourite of mine, before taking the Red Arrow home I often eat there. It's unfortunately closed on Sunday. I balked at the prices at Madison's - looks like an awesome place, but not the kind of place I wanted to hit with my weekend backpack and a winter parka.

The hardware grill was closed, as was pazzo pazzo (I'm guessing) because they didn't pick up their phone.

I ended up eating (ugh) at "The Grill" at the Comfort Inn downtown out of sheer hunger and desperation. A mediocre mushroom burger on a stale bun with over-seasoned and overcooked fries. A step up from Subway and Tim Hortons, but not by much.

I'm going to have to round up a dinner spot on a par with The Blue Plate: cheap, chic, yummy, and open on Sundays.

Anyways, I really appreciate all the tips and now have a fine list of Edmonton eating establishments to hit next time I'm up there (probably soon).

As a sidelight, the "Projections" exhibit at the Art Gallery of Alberta is exceptional and should not be missed.

It's one of the finest mixed-media shows I've seen.

Thanks again, everyone!

-T

^i live within 50m of "the grill" and you couldnt pay me to step foot. Sorry to hear.

In the area of the red arrow i would also highly recommend "axis cafe" (if open).

Yeah, the Red Arrow is a business-oriented highway bus that goes between Edmonton and Calgary in less than 3 hours, either with a stop in Red Deer or none at all.

It's more expensive than the greyhound so no homeless people/convicts/toothless carnies. But it's still cheap at $60/one way.

It features:
- Wifi (yeah!)
- Only 3 seats per row, so you can get single-row seating
- Free drinks and cookies
- Laptop Plugins
- Movies
- A bathroom that is actually clean
- Staff that are actually pleasant
- Seats that are actually leather

It's way better than flying and much cheaper.

if you run across anyone from the van horne institute, see if you could find out how many of them we could buy for 6,000,000,000 or 8,000,000,000 or 10,000,000,000 dollars so we could dispatch them all over the province to places like fort mcmurray and grand prairie and banff and jasper and hinton and high level and cold lake etc., not just between edmonton and red deer and calgary and yeg. seeing as it's almost as fast and a lot more flexible, do you think maybe they'll be interested?

But for the 25,000,000,000 that this "blowout factor" gave us, we could add free concierge service at all terminals, and yes, we could even build terminals!!!

And for you old time forumers, we couled promise to get you some Havarti to serve your anxious Thunder Bay guests.

I'm taking Red Arrow on Wednesday, and I would gladly pay an extra $10 to take a magical train and save like 30 minutes on my trip. HSR is totally worth that extra John A.

Back on topic though, what is open downtown on Sunday evenings? Most of the high-high-end and hotel places. Blue Plate. Spaghetti Factory. Creperie. Lazia, maybe? Errr...
