Huế, Việt Nam

Huế, located on the banks of the Perfume River in Central Vietnam, is home to some 350,000 people. As the site of the Nguyễn dynasty palace, it served as Vietnam's capital until 1945. During the Vietnam war, the city saw fierce fighting, with Communist forces holed up in the imperial citadel for several weeks following the Tet Offensive. The Communists were defeated only after intense street-by-street fighting, leaving much of the city in ruins. Since its designation as a UNESCO site in 1993, the imperial capital has since been largely restored. Despite a laid-back, sleepy atmosphere that belies its size, Huế is famous for its cuisine, eclectic architecture, arts scene, and annual summer festival.
