What's the tallest skyscraper in the world?

What's the tallest skyscraper in the world? Is it the Taipei building or the Petronas towers?

Well it's actually Burj Dubai. Even though they haven't finished it yet it's current height is above any other free standing structure.

Whoops.

burj dubai (incomplete) > SWFC (incomplete) > Taipei 101 > Sears > Petronas round out the top 5.

Of course, other buildings (ICC, Spire) will enter this list when they grow up.

It sounds like someone is a newcomer to the internet.

Galaxtico, all you have to do is open a web browser and then type in what you are looking for. In this case, type in "World's tallest building" and voila, lots of sites are listed. If you can figure out how to be a member at this site, finding out which building is the world's tallest should be easy.

Munda, i'd hardly consider the Chicago Spire one of the world's tallest buildings since it is just a hole in the ground right now, and he didn't ask for a list.

I think the building must be completed to "officially" count.
All buildings on the "top 10" diagram has the status "built"
Burj Dubai is the tallest building in the world, but not officially IMO.

Quote:
Taipei 101 was overtaken in height on July 21, 2007 by the Burj Dubai in Dubai, UAE, upon the completion of that building's 141st floor.[6] The title of "world's tallest building" still rests with Taipei 101, though, as international architectural standards define a "building" as a structure capable of being fully occupied. The Burj Dubai is on course to claim the title once its construction is finished.

I think, for the sake of simplicity, this list is the best indicator of the world's tallest buildings. Switch 4 and 5 if you want. True the first two are not done yet, but SWFC is topped out, and Burj will be soon. Taipei 101 is still the world's tallest DONE building, at least for another year or so.

And here are the images just for the heck of it:

Burj Dubai (eikongraphia.com)

SWFC (jaunted.com)

Taipei 101 (krugerfan.com)

Sears Tower (lensimpressions.net)

Petronas Towers (internationalpropertyinvestment.com)

why do you guys think SWFC is/will be taller than taipei 101??

SWFC 492m (1614 ft)
Taipei 101 508m (1666 ft)

the spire of the taipei is counted thats why it is the tallest complete building in the world.

Wow, SWFC is massive and I don't even mean it in an over-the-top way either. That thing looks like it should be the tallest building on Earth.

as much as you would like the ctbuh not to consider spires as part of the official height of a building, they do. the top ten tallest buildings in the world completed or under construction:

1 burj dubai
2 chicago spire*
3 china 117 tower*
4 doha convention center tower*
5 freedom tower*
6 pentominium*
7 taipei 101
8 federation tower*
9 burj al alam*
10 shanghai world financial center
and bumped from the top ten
12 petronas towers
13 sears tower

^Russia Tower is also a go IIRC, and that tops out at 2009 ft / 612 m

And I think SWFC is topped out, and pretty much done. Soon, Hong Kong's ICC will also bump down Petronas and Sears a notch (490m to top, no spire).
