rail transit, specifically LRT, is my favorite man-made creation next to skyscrapers. go figure.
I fell in love with LRT when i was a young boy and Calgary got its first LRT line. one ride was all i needed to know it was the best form of public transit. from that ride forward, i considered all other modes of public transit yucky and slow. also, it made me feel like a big-city, kid. haha

I always wondered when planning for Pittsburgh's light rail system began. I know it was constructed from 1981 thru July, 1985, with the entire 25-mile system being fully functional in 1987.

There might be a possible extension of the light rail system into the Strip at some point, leading to a heavy-rail commuter line up the Allegheny River past Arnold, PA. Commuter rail is definitely in the works tho -- they're trying to figure out how to connect it with the T at Steel Plaza...

I'm bringing RATP's interactive map of the entire Paris metro network. It simply includes everything going on rail. All light rail, subway and commuter lines. Use the little control at the upper right corner of the map to zoom and move on it. You may click on any station, that would show the lines serving it.
Of course our network needs improvements. It is all centered on (self-centered) central Paris while suburb-to-suburb links are very much needed nowadays. The "Grand Paris" plan will certainly be helpful in that.

I haven't been there yet myself (was u/c last time I was there) but it's Malmö, Sweden. Newish tunnel and new trains. I have been on nearly that type of train tho, many times. Stockholm has the same one, except ours are longer and don't have any toilets.

I don't think anyone ever posted this recently completed light rail extension in Pittsburgh. The $529+ million underground/under river subway extension leading to the North Shore which is a narrow, long flat riverbank that contains many of Pittsburgh's largest venues. (Heinz Field, PNC Park, Rivers Casino, Carnegie Science Center, Alcoa HQ, Andy Warhol Museum (Worth billions - It is the largest single artist museum in the country) + many more new buildings going up. A boring machine was floated in from Germany for the boring of the parallel underground tubes. The length of Pittsburgh light rail known as the "T" for trolley as is Boston's is now 26.2 miles.
Pittsburgh probably is one of the smallest downtown CBD's with a subway I think. It now has 7 lightrail stops. 4 underground and 3 above ground, & not counting an Amtrak station. There are also over 100 bus routes that connect through downtown. Pretty dense for a downtown that is no bigger than .8 miles by 1.0 mile in size.

Here's a forumers recent walking tour showing some of the many many new public spaces and structures on this stretch of land. Billions have been spent in the last few years and it is not built out yet. Maybe about 75% so far. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ht=north+shore
