Took a more scenic route to the cottage and back this weekend. Passed through Tottenham, Beeton, Alliston and Stayner. Stayner is right up there for worst town names in Ontario along with Scugog, Mono, Puce, etc. I digress. Anyway, there's some nice churches up that way.

Saint Louis Catholic Church - Waterloo https://saintlouisparish.ca/ I've never been inside but some people were voting here, as they were at the Anglican church down the street.

Those that can't vote attend this church on Three Bridges Road (St Jacobs) - Conestoga Mennonite Meetinghouse https://gameo.org/index.php?title=Co...ntario,_Canada)

(I attended a service here once many decades ago.)

On the way back from up north, in order to avoid the super annoying bottle neck that always forms at 400 SB and 401 interchange, I exited Finch and went south on Weston becuase it's been a while since I drove down Weston. That was a mistake. Construction brought Finch down to one lane. And the neighbourhood around there is as soul sucking as I recall, though they've built a couple of condos I really like the look of.

Anyway, saw this, which I'd never noticed before:

I know I've posted a picture of the new Winnipeg LDS Temple before, but I thought I'd mention they are holding an open house with tours for the public over the next couple of weeks. The recently-completed Temple will be dedicated on Oct. 31 at which point it will become off-limits to non-members, so I snagged a ticket.

It is certainly a beautiful building on the outside (though admittedly nowhere near as big as some of the LDS Temples in other places), so it will be interesting to have a look around while I have the chance.

I really liked St. Andrew United Presbyterian Church in Grafton - reminded me of the churches you see in Upstate New York. I could live somewhere around Grafton and Colborne - I took a bunch of side roads down to the lake - very nice part of Ontario! (Lakeport Rd has once of the most tasteful modern homes I've seen.)

Very interesting... that's a pretty traditional-looking church. I am somewhat surprised that there are Ukrainian Catholic churches in rural areas and small towns east of the Great Lakes. I always figured Ukrainian settlement in Canada was predominantly in the west, with those in the east gravitating towards cities.

I had never heard of Tiny before coming across your post.

Yeah, it is surprising. "Ethnic" churches, especially those that have expensive unique featres, aren't usually in rural rural areas. Of course, there are many on the fringe rural area of cities where land was cheap and still accessible to their communities.

I knew about the Ukranians given farm land out west so it makes sense out there due to settlement patterns. Why there is a Ukranian church in Tiny, ON, I don't know. There is a heavy seasonal Polish population who cottage there, such as my inlaws, and why the nickname for the beach is Polska Playa, but there is no Polish church. And there are some Polish Canadians who eventually retired there or relocated. My mother in law would sometimes go to church during cottage weekends and would end up at that one since it's close enough to what you'd get at any of the Polish churches back in Mississauga.

And literally no one has heard of Tiny. People know neighbouring Wasaga, Penetang and Midland. Though nobody knows about Tay either. Not surprising given these two towns have no downtown and are really just amalgams of really small communities that also have no Main Street.

Tiny, Tay and Flos (later amalgamated into Springwater, which is north of Barrie) were all named after Lady Maitland's dogs.

That Ukrainian RC church started as a cottage church for Ukrainians from Toronto: http://www.cawajachurch.com/history.php?lng=0
Completed in 1989, thirty years after the first Ukrainians from Toronto bought land at Cawaja Beach.

My ancestors cottage church would be Church of the Redeemer in Rosseau (1873)

I wonder what the attendance would be outside of the summer months for the Ukrainian one.
