Lawmakers from both sides of the political aisle and transportation leaders from the federal government and two states gathered Monday on a breezy bluff overlooking a four-lane highway bottleneck near the newly reopened Hoover Dam Lodge for a historic groundbreaking for the first section of Interstate 11.

Las Vegas to land 'world's largest' Hooters location
Posted: Apr 08, 2015 7:29 AM PDT Updated: Apr 08, 2015 3:14 PM PDT

Hooters, the popular dining chain that boasts trademark wings and its attractive female servers, is set to open what it calls the largest of its locations in the world in Las Vegas.

On Wednesday, the company announced plans to open its new location poolside at The Palms just west of the Las Vegas Strip. Plans call for the new location to be situated in more than 15,200 square feet of space.

The new locations will also boast a two-story dining area which will help seat more than 500 guests, according to Hooters.

A large poolside bar included with the new Hooters is slated to open in early May with the main dining area expected to open shortly after.

Las Vegas is already home to a Hooters branded hotel-casino on East Tropicana Avenue just off the Strip.

ACM Awards returns in 2016; MGM Resorts Festival Grounds to join party

The ACM Awards shifted to the spacious AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on April 19 for its 50th anniversary, celebrated in Texas-sized fashion on CBS. After the show’s hoedown in the big barn that is home to the Dallas Cowboys, the show is back in Las Vegas for 2016 and is once more going to span multiple venues on the Strip.

Specifically, the new MGM Resorts Festival Grounds will be abuzz with country stars during the ACM Awards' return from April 1-3, 2016. A trio of headliners already is booked to perform over three nights: Kenny Chesney, Carrie Underwood and Dierks Bentley.

This is the second event booked at the Festival Grounds after the upcoming Rock in Rio USA festival the weekends of May 8-9 and May 15-16. These ACM Awards performances are to be full concerts, each night, on the open 50-acre space, not abbreviated sets, as was the case when the Linq hosted the ACM Party for a Cause last year.

Hunter Hayes did perform a full show on the Thursday night preceding the ACM Awards telecast, but the ACM Party for a Cause was a spree of 20 acts over 48 hours — those performing included Rascal Flatts, Florida Georgia Line and Keith Urban.

Mandalay Bay Events Center will continue to be used as a “throw-to” venue for the April 3 telecast, meaning that Las Vegas is matching the 70,000-capacity ACM Awards telecast with a triumvirate of indoor-outdoor venues, all on the Strip. The show from AT&T Stadium drew high praise for the scope of its staging, with crane-operated cameras sweeping over the huge crowd, but lacked any measure of coziness.

MGM Grand has always served as a versatile TV stage, and the additions of the outdoor venue with the Strip backdrop should at least equal the dynamism of thousands of country fans cheering in Arlington. It was a great show, for a one-off, but Las Vegas is saying, “We’ll take it from here.”

Amtrak route from Las Vegas to Los Angeles gaining momentum

http://lasvegassun.com/news/2015/apr...es-back-track/

Will you go on Amtrak from Las Vegas to Los Angeles again?

Quote:
A group of federal and local leaders gathered in downtown Las Vegas today to discuss something that hasn't been seen in the region for 18 years: a passenger rail service to ferry riders back and forth between Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
Let the speculation begin.

Rock in Rio takes a gamble by coming to Las Vegas

In its favor, Rock in Rio has a staggering track record — 7 million tickets sold since 1985 at festivals in Brazil, Portugal and Spain; $23 million contributed to social and environmental causes; substantial economic boosts to the cities — and a lineup heavy on popular mainstream acts.

Occupying acreage that once served as the recreational vehicle campground for Circus Circus, the custom-made "City of Rock" will be able to accommodate 85,000 people per day, and organizers spent $25 million to overhaul the site, including building permanent electrical, water and sewage infrastructure.

Medina says his company is spending $50 million to cover other operating costs, including booking talent and an aggressive, yearlong media campaign. He said he has already recouped $14 million of that by selling sponsorships to corporations, including Mercedes-Benz and Corona, and the rest will hinge on sales of tickets and concessions.

About 102,000 weekend passes have already been sold, roughly split between the two weekends, according to organizers, and VIP passes for May 9 and May 16 have already sold out. Half of that tally is from ticket buyers from the Los Angeles area, the rest is split between Las Vegas residents and buyers from 32 countries, organizers said.

"The truth is, most major festivals lose money in their first year or two," Bongiovanni said. "So, it wouldn't be surprising if it doesn't meet expectations the first time around."

Riviera hotel closing its doors today

The 23-story hotel, the first high-rise resort on the Strip, was purchased in February by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority for $182.5 million and the property will some day become the front door to a revamped convention center complex, the $2.3 billion Las Vegas Global Business District.

Dancers, dignitaries mark start of $4 billion Resorts World Las Vegas

With traditional Chinese thunder drummers stirring excitement and ornately costumed lion dancers displaying their own brand of cultural athleticism, the north end of the Strip came to life Tuesday with a groundbreaking for the $4 billion Resorts World Las Vegas project.

When Resorts World Las Vegas opens in mid-2018, it will bring 13,000 permanent jobs to the city. Along the way, an estimated 30,000 construction jobs will be filled as the 3,000-room first phase grows from the 87-acre site that once was targeted as the site of Boyd Gaming’s Echelon resort.

The project could eventually build out to more than 6,000 rooms.

American construction crews will be hired for the project, and the concept of a Chinese-themed resort was delivered to Genting by Las Vegas architect Paul Steelman.

The Chinese-themed resort will include four room towers, a 175,000-square-foot casino, a 4,000-seat theater, an aquarium, a panda exhibit, an indoor water park and a replica of the Great Wall of China.

That video looks a lot different than the last renderings I saw. What happened to all the other buildings? Looks like just one large one now.

MGM Resorts might rename, revamp its ‘underutilized asset’ Monte Carlo

MGM Resorts International CEO Jim Murren said in a recent interview that his company, which owns Monte Carlo, sees a lot of potential in the property and may make adjustments. Although he didn’t reveal details, Murren indicated that a wide range of options is on the table, including a name change.

The opportunity arose with the planned opening of the Park, a new shopping and entertainment area that MGM Resorts is building between Monte Carlo and New York-New York. Murren pointed to that as one factor motivating his company to examine Monte Carlo.

He also referred to Monte Carlo as a “gateway” that is “cradling” the arena MGM Resorts is building in the same area as the Park. The arena and the Park are scheduled to open in spring 2016.

$50M Visitor Gateway on Mount Charleston opens Saturday

With more than 1 million visitors annually, Spring Mountains National Recreation Area already ranks as one of the most popular destinations for valley residents looking to cool down and blow off some steam.

Now it has a new decompression chamber.

That’s how U.S. Forest Service civil engineer John Harris likes to describe the recently completed Spring Mountains Visitor Gateway, a 128-acre complex along the Kyle Canyon Wash that officially opens to the public Saturday morning.

Proposed Las Vegas track would let drivers zoom in Ferraris, other exotics

A planned racetrack aims to give drivers another place to take the wheel of a luxury sports car and unleash their inner speed-demon.

Executives with World Class Driving are planning to open Speed Vegas a few miles south of the M Resort on Las Vegas Boulevard at Sloan Road, about 11 miles south of the Strip.

Construction hasn’t started at the remote, barren site, and Speed Vegas’ website gives little information, including when the track will open and how much it will charge. But the site says customers can drive a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Aston Martin and other vehicles at the “fastest” and “most extreme new experience in Las Vegas.”

Project-site owner Scott Gragson said the track would “hopefully” open by the first quarter of 2016. He said customers wouldn’t be able to race each other, but they would wear helmets and could floor it.
