Will form a nice cluster of density north of Fulton with the Google HQ and +1,000,000 sq ft office building Sterling Bay is planning for the Coyne parking lot.

and the seams on the wood cladding...woof. looks like they just rolled out some sticky laminate from home depot and called it a day.

god eveyrhting sucks so much about this project, and the only consolation is it will probably be torn down in the next 20 years. what a complete waste of time effort money and resources.

^ It is cheaply built precisely for that reason: it's not meant to last. It's meant to make money until the property is acquired by another entity which will develop it into a higher use. But if the retail services the neighborhood, then all the better for local residents.

I would like to see more developments like this downtown: particularly in Streeterville where all you get is either massive buildings spanning half a block or a giant parking lot.

Indeed. This project is actually rather good for what it is. It isn't meant to last 40 years let alone 100. If the economy and demand stay strong in the neighborhood this building will likely to last 25 years.

For one/two story rather temporary retail structures this is actually decent compared to the other utterly banal ubiquitous one story retail structures found most elsewhere.

there are towers all around this site. i dont see why it should take 25 years to begin with.

It recently hit me that the legendary Morrie Mages sports store in River North, that became MC Mages and eventually became Sports Authority, would've gone dark with the chain bankruptcy a couple months ago. So the famous multistory shop on LaSalle & Ontario, with the makeshift local sports hall of fame, may well not get another life, at least in retail. Has anyone heard of any plans for that quarter-block? Potentially that whole block (including Ohio House, which apparently isn't on the National Register..) will become cannon fodder for a highrise by the next boom.

(Though honestly, the Best Western catercorner needs to die sooner than Ohio House does.)
