Interesting Facts/Records (in own words): Start Point transmitter was built for
embettering the radio reception in Devon and went in service on June 4th, 1939. It use
two guyed masts insulated against ground as antenna, one acting as radiator and the other
as reflector.
Both masts are equipped with a break for installation of a loading coil.
The station was used in World War II for horizontally polarized mediumwave transmissions. This transmission
mode made them inpractical for radio navigation of German aircraft.
For these transmissions an antenna wire was spun between the masts.
In World War II it was also used for shortwave broadcasting.
The station is today capable of broadcasting on 1053 kHz with 100 kW and 693 kHz with 50 kW but only latter frequency is
used.
