thanks Patrick.
actually no. I live in Novo Hamburgo, which is in the metro area of Porto Alegre, but its 45km away (and hardly can be called a suburb, in fact, its possible to say that Novo Hamburgo has its own little metro area consisting of neighboring municipalities). The road that cuts the POA metro has terrible traffic, and fuel is more expensive in Brazil than in the US, so you can be sure I will think twice before going to Porto Alegre to take shots of buildings.
Specially because the subway doesnt reach Novo Hamburgo (they are building it just now), so I have to go by car. And if I go by car, its IMPOSSIBLE to park in Porto Alegre downtown. And parking lots and buildings are QUITE EXPENSIVE there.
Last week I DID went to Porto Alegre to take some photos. I wanted to take advantage of the fact I went there for work reasons and had some extra free time.
But then, several things happened. One SSC friend who works on the Public Market (which I modelled btw) got me a special permission to park on their lots (closed to public).
But I got LOST in downtown
Gee, I lost like one hour trying to find my way to that damn parking lot. What happened was that many streets in POA downtown are one way only (and several others are pedestrian streets with sidewalks instead of asphalt pavement). And I could arrive at the side of the public market, and had to take a turn right to reach the parking lot, but the street only came on the contrary direction!
To make matters worse, a guy in a motorcycle stoped at my side at a traffic light and made me some signs. I pulled down my window and he told me my tire was empty. Oh shit!
I managed to stop at a private parking (since there was no place to park on the streets) and asked the owner, and old man, if I could stop there just to change my tire. He let me do it, so I changed the tire.
But by that time I was so pissed off with not finding my way around and having a flat tire that I just called my friend and told him "thanks, but Im leaving".
Well, thats it.
So, after making you read so much text, I am finally ANSWERING your question: from where I take my textures??
Several sources:
1 - SSC: aside from me there is hardly any brazilian here at SSP. But at SSC the brazilian forum has more than 500 members. And at least some 15 active forumers from Porto Alegre who take many pictures.
2 -
www.portoimagem.com : site with photos of Porto Alegre, owned by the guy who works at the public market
3 - Panoramio
4 - Jaime Costa: its a guy who shot most of the Porto Alegre buildings for the Emporis site. I asked him for the original photos without the watermarks, just to make the models
5 - this guy I found on Flickr which had awesome building photos from Porto Alegre
Since I do not take the photos myself, I have to go through a lot of searching to complete a building, because most photos I find usually only cover part of the building, or the building´s most "famous" façade, etc. Also, many photos tend to be artistic and include other elements in the scene like trees and people... sometimes covering too much of the scene, and its a pain in the ass to remove them in photoshop...
so really, is a combination of everything, several sources, photoshop editing, etc...
