Austin: VOTE

Voter turnout is very low so far today - which means the reactionaries are going to be disproportionately represented at the polls. Every member of this forum better get themselves out and vote - or the ANC (Laura Morrison) will win.

Already voted early on Tuesday. Early voting numbers were very low, only 4 percent.

Even though I don't live in Austin, I have to say that I'm so glad Jennifer Kim didn't win. I thought she was going to win, and I was amazed that Shade won by a huge margin.

So it looks like there will be a runoff between Morrison and Galindo in place 4.

^ Yeah, it was 39 to 29 last time I saw the numbers. Oh, god, please don't let her win!

Morrison will have an easier time in a runoff than in the general election - her voting core are the people who vote in every single election, no matter how minor. It's going to take a Herculean effort from Galindo now.

One way everybody could help is to remind people that Morrison, despite being a self-identified progressive, is not the natural inheritor of Cravey's votes. Places like Burnt Orange Report tend to fall back into this way of thinking - but Morrison's really representing the Old Money - and, to boot, people like Jim Skaggs.

hey guys, i need some info on this stuff. first off, how many people end up voting in a runoff? second, how are people eligible to vote? i have a lot of friends that go to UT/Tx state that are living here for summer. if there is a way they can eligibly vote, i could probably get a good 30 people to vote Cid.

Pretty sure they had to be registered a while back to vote in this runoff.

As long as they're a registered voter in Travis County, and had done so before the elections, then yes, they could vote. Make sure to have your voter registration card and or a photo id.

By the way Laura Morrison did send me a message back when I sent her a message regarding her stance on highrises. This is what she sent back to me.

Hello ........(JDawgboy)

I am not against development in the inner city and thanks for contacting me
and allowing me to correct this. I have worked productively on a variety of
projects as a community advocate that have resulted in significant increases
in density beyond what the existing zoning allowed (specifically in my own
neighborhood along/near W 5th St there are in fact 3 of these projects going
up right now which with have approximately 40% more units).

The rfp for the Green Water Treatment and surroundings calls for maximum
scale. My point is that because it is city land, a community vision /
dialogue should take place to ensure that it is used in the best interest of
the public.

Thanks,
Laura

There was an article in the paper today that mentioned she was on a board that banned Mcmansions in Austin, more specifically banning homes up to a certain height. It also noted that she helped encourage mixed use development along major corridors.

I of course do agree that the City needs to invite citizens to voice their opinions on what goes up at Green and Seaholm, or any new major area of development. But I would like to see them pose the question as asking what people want as far as uses and amenities, not just asking if they'd prefer it be developed or left to the field mice. Actually show them the benefits of their proposals/ideas instead of just developer talk. Regular citizens will be more warm to a project if they know they're getting something good. Example: Block 21 with the Austin City Limits component.

She's misleading you - the stuff along 5th/6th was emphatically called for in the neighborhood plan which she had nothing to do with (zoning parts done by Dave Sullivan and to a lesser extent Mark Stine); and she would have taken it back if she could have, given her behavior on cases like Spring and Whole Foods and 7Rio. Since it had just been passed by the city council when she became more heavily involved (as I was moving out of the neighborhood), it was impossible to do anything at that point.

One of the few things that neighborhood plan bought us was a few years of safety from people like her. Only lasts so long, though, since you can't possibly foresee everything.
