Excellent. This will help place Houston in a better position to advance the frontier of Medical Science. The more the better.

Midway Breaks Ground on 150-Acre East River Mixed-Use Development in Houston

Quote:
Houston-based developer Midway has broken ground on East River, a 150-acre mixed-use project that is located on the Buffalo Bayou in the city’s Historic Fifth Ward. Phase I will center around development of The Laura, a 360-unit apartment community, as well as 250,000 square feet of office space and 110,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space. In addition, the first phase, completion of which is slated for 2023, will include 13,000 square feet of open green space for public events and live music. Lastly, a nine-hole, par-three public golf course that includes a restaurant and patio bar will open at East River next year. Project partners include global design firm Page, OJB Landscape Architecture, civil engineer BGE Inc. and general contractor Burton Construction, among others. At full buildout, East River will span 60 city blocks and more than 1 million square feet of commercial and residential space that connects to the rest of the city via a network of hiking and biking trails.

Is that the former evil KBR/Halliburton site?

Also in that above post, would be great to walk around Discovery Green now with all of that new development that’s been happening on the peripheries of it now. Haven’t been to Discovery Green since prob 2019 and may never go again as my parents now live near Fredericksburg; so I may never be back to Houston ever again; even though I grew up there and my parents lived in Kingwood until early 2020. I remember when Disco Green was new and remember going downtown in high school before 06 when all of that was just poop parking lots.

Why do you call the KBR/Halliburton site evil? My dad worked there for 30 years and it was a wonderful career, and the company treated him well.

Is the Kirby Crossing going where the old AD Players used to be? Across from Whole Paycheck?

Yep. It looks to take a good stretch of West Alabama from Kirby almost to Virginia. All I remember from that area is that when 2727 Kirby was under construction, the sales office was in one of the small buildings that were demo'd a few years back. Legit one of the least "swank" sales offices I had seen compared to some of the other projects at that time.

Autry Park

Rendering of Phase I & II office components from CBRE

Leasing brochure: https://www.cbre.us/resources/fileas...17d8e4fbaa.pdf

Blurb on office component from CBRE

Quote:
Autry Park will feature two Class A office towers in the center of this emerging district. Phase I office has a modern, architecturally unique sustainable design based on natural light and cross-laminated timber (CLT) that create a striking urban scale office with street and park connection. The building will be a luxury boutique offering that is constructed of a CLT Hybrid structural system (the structural frame is steel and the floor/ceiling deck material is cross laminated timber, CLT). The CLT deck creates a very appealing wood soffit finish in each lease space. A great alternative to downtown, Autry Park is part of a 14 acre mixed use campus offering restaurants, fitness luxury multifamily housing and greenspace amenities with a new stoplight anchored intersection directly into Buffalo Bayou Park. The initial mixed use components of high-rise and garden style residential structures are scheduled for completion in Q4 2021 while the initial retail and restaurant components are scheduled for Q1 2022 completion.

Memorial Park land bridge takes big step forward with new tunnels

Diane Cowen,
Staff writer

Sep. 9, 2021
Updated: Sep. 13, 2021 11:59 a.m.

The Memorial Park land bridge that will add 25 acres of native prairie over six lanes of traffic has reached a construction milestone: Two pairs of concrete tunnel tubes are in place with 500,000 cubic yards of dirt piled on top.

Passersby essentially see four giant mounds of dirt where Houstonians used to run, walk and play, but it’s now possible to envision how people and wildlife can traverse the north and south sides of the park safely and in an environment true to the city’s origin as Gulf Coast prairie.

Thomas Woltz, owner and principal at the Nelson Byrd Woltz landscape architecture firm that developed the park’s master plan and designed the land bridge over Memorial Drive, said that the project and others like it elsewhere are a timely answer to urban density and encroaching freeways.

“We’re in a fascinating moment where we have built our cities without generous planning of public spaces, unfortunately, and this is across America, not just Houston,” Woltz said. “We build buildings and look for where we can make public green space. It’s where we find ourselves as a nation.

“It occurs to us, what if the landscape could become triumphant over the gray infrastructure of an urban city? What if we could lift people, plants, prairie and wildlife up and over this tear through the public park?” Woltz said. “We basically are generating new acreage of parkland above the highway. It’s the park triumphing over the highway.”
