I think the city settled on preservation of the north and east facades, but not the entire structure. Supposedly this makes the project workable (??).

Even if it's not an official rendering, it's nice to see what something in that space might look li.e
Is the Maclaren going to continue to be a slum?

Reading the CBC article about it, city approval probably means granting of a TIF. Which probably also means Provincial approval.

I don't really find the McLaren to be a negative presence in the area. It's nothing like the Windsor or the Vendome which seem to be magnets for sketchiness.

I understand their owners try to be a positive presence in the area, hence the plan for the new building for affordable housing.

I just don't understand why they would pump millions into a new tower without refurbishing the existing building, which is in bad... but not horrible condition.

I think that's part of the plan, and the reason why they were hoping to avoid full heritage designation.

Maybe I'm too cynical, but I wouldn't bet a dime on that being built as shown.

Would it even be used without the government requiring it?
I think the uturn east of River on Bishop is a residual of when the bridge repairs closed Bishop to two lanes and left turns from River were not allowed.

Large seniors development in North Kildonan on Palliser lands had an open house late June. Attempting to go to the City for approvals in the fall.

Interesting to see something like a full service village being proposed - would probably be a first in Winnipeg to have that level of amenities/services in a seniors complex.

They've been planning that site for sooo long. Always had some form of towers in there. Will be interesting to see if this one actually goes ahead.

It's kind of a weird property. The church in there. Then MPI. Then manufacturing. Eventually the large warehouse thing will be converted to something else.

134 Smith (the milk carton building) is undergoing exterior renovations now. Most of the balcony railings are gone and some demo is happening on the podium. Not sure if this is going to be an extensive reno or just a small cosmetic refresh, but it's good to see because this building has been looking rough for many years now.

EDIT: Initially said 134 Donald

I always thought of it as a lunch box, but yeah, milk carton fits better...

Were they designed and built by the same developer?

While I was a kid back when they were being erected, I think you are correct and it was the same developer.

There's also one in Calgary although I don't know if it was done by the same people.
