The annual No Pants light rail ride, like similar events around the world, has been cancelled for 2021. I've never participated, but it would have been interesting to see attendees with masks but no trousers.

I realize that. I remember lots of young girls who rode on a light rail for everyday. She should keep her pants on. Don't take it off!

An uninformed comment that doesn't bode well for the Arizona Avenue Alternatives Analysis being conducted by Valley Metro. I don't know, though, if the mayor's misguided opinion is shared by a majority on the city council:

Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke said Waymo’s ride hailing service is an innovative approach to transportation.

“It makes a lot more sense to look for additional technologies rather than thinking we need to rip up roads and put light rail or to add an expensive bus line,” he said.

Who gets the task of making driverless vehicles as inexpensive for the end user as busses and rail?

Hahaha. Great point.

I feel like people (myself included) allowed our imaginations to run wild for much of the 2010s about what driverless vehicle technology could mean, but after seeing Nikola de-pants'd and the other comapnies stuck in a constant 'testing' phase, the meaningful commercial applications of this technology seem to be rather limited in the near and medium term.

Not too mention driverless vehicles are not going to take cars off the streets. They will still add to and/or be affected by rush hour, traffic congestions, delays, etc..

Right! Too busy! Too many rush hours traffic. It could be worst. They are too slow and they are very congestion. They could stuck the traffic. They will be late.

Weekend, they will slow it down. Not too much rush hours traffic on every weekend and especially for holidays.

Bummer. Lindsay is my go to for going south from Mesa to Gilbert/Queen Creek because it has no freeway interchanges.

The community will also enjoy seven public art installations along the extension and updated landscaping, including more than 200 new trees.

The Federal Transit Administration announced the second allocation of grant funding for the Northwest Extension Phase II rail project. In addition to its first allocation, the project has now been allocated a total of $100 million in federal Capital Investment Grant (CIG) funds.

That's great news! I'm so happy for it! Hopefully they will continue to funding for Northwest Phoenix Phase II project.

Where they can go next? From Metrocenter to where? Next future light rail expansion?

Some upcoming projects with opportunities for public input:

Western Canalscape (similar to the Grand Canalscape but along the Western Canal in South Phoenix)

https://www.phoenix.gov/streets/westerncanalscape

This project is promising because there's currently just a gravel path on the canal and no signals at street crossings. The intent is to create a paved path connecting the light rail terminus at Baseline/Central and the bus transit center at Baseline/24th St.

Adding bike lanes to 3rd Avenue between Osborn and Indian School

https://www.phoenix.gov/streets/lanechanges/3rdAvenue

This stretch is always frustrating because the bike lanes mysteriously disappear for half a mile here. Filling this gap would go a long way toward providing continuity from Downtown to Uptown.

Nice! I take it this is for the south central line? Will they do the Capitol extension though downtown at the same time? Or are they will too unsure on the specific route?

The canalscape is the most overhyped thing ever. No shade, no plants, just a sidewalk surrounded by dirt. Pathetic!

It was on 3rd Street between Jefferson and Washington. I think it may be for a loop connection on 3rd.

The loops are to be installed at 3rd Ave and 5th St.

https://www.valleymetro.org/project/...n-downtown-hub

The project only goes as far as 3rd Ave for them to build the Capitol tracks without mucking everything up again.

This puzzles me. I understand protecting the power lines, but there could be a LOT of ways of bringing shade and/or plants. Use desert-friendly plants, build shade structures (maybe some with PV), and the occasional bench. People REALLY want a space that changes the parking lot feel of Phoenix, and the canals have long been a place that people gravitate towards. Reward this instinct, and I think that the city politicians will get maximum bang for the buck. It's way cheaper per mile than streets, and WAY cheaper than Hanse Park renovations (at least in terms of per user).
