I have known mike personally since the early 90s. He was a good small businessman and great guy. If you met him personally you might think the same.

However.

I didn't agree with a lot of what he said or did in the past as a council member.

I thought he wasn't pro business enough especially downtown.

What i really admire about him though is his ability's to be a fiscal hawk.

IMO...He now has the experience and skill to run Edmonton.

I'm sure Mike is a nice guy and all but the reason you stated above should be reason enough to turn him down.

I don't like politicians who pit one part of the city against another. Whether you lives downtown, in the suburbs, or in an urban neighbourhood, you have the right to equal levels of high quality public services.

If you find a politician that checks all the boxes...please let me know.

In the mean time....im going to go with someone who is financially responsible.

Nickel is all about growing the suburbs over supporting the redevelopment of our existing built-up area. That in itself should indicate that he's not all that financially aware, given the high cost of servicing and maintaining greenfield development.

He also says he wants to attract more young people here, but everything he has done in the past and what he is advocating for in his platform will do the opposite (i.e. going back to the Bill Smith days of the 90s).

EVERY Council needs a fiscal hawk.

Sure, as long as they are respectful and attempt to work in a collaborative fashion.

If Nickel does somehow get voted in as Mayor, he will have a tough time getting anything on his agenda done if he doesn't work with the rest of Council. Iveson was successful in moving his agenda forward because he collaborated well with the other Councillors and was able to get them to buy-in.

Just looking at the mayoral candidates so far and they all seem....

Just. So. Dull.

Beyond giving away tax subsidies to big corporations or having big plans to internally tinker with city administration, none show any sort of vision for actually improving the daily lives of the people of Edmonton. Where is the focus on improved transit and mobility? Where is the focus on expanded recreation areas and arts/culture opportunities? Where is the focus on building affordable, appropriate housing in established neighbourhoods? Nothing so far.

Indeed.

Not necessarily what you do, but how you do it.

Don wants to leave the annexed land west of hwy 2 undeveloped as agricultural. We are pushed up tight against 41ave sw now and need to get that developed. We are losing a lot to eia Leduc county, Leduc and Beaumont already. You see all the big buildings going up in the county east of Hwy 2? Residential in the county too between nisku and Beaumont, all high end homes. They just seem to keep things going there so there’s no way we can just sit idle and watch them get these taxes jobs etc and let that sit as farmland. Doesn’t make sense. Mike would likely get things happening on the south side imo. Maybe he could get the highway repaired too. Driven out to the airport lately on the rickety potholed mess. Sad and quite a welcoming to Edmonton. Someone needs to work with the province and get some things done on that and other important things. Butting heads with them gets us nowhere. I’m noticing a lot smoother roads in 403 than ours all falling apart in 780. Just one thing. (Must admit though it’s pretty hard not to butt heads with a butthead. lol)

There is Discovery Business Park under development at the NE corner of the QEII and Highway 19. Amazon and Polykar are already there, so I am not sure where you are hearing Iveson saying we wants no development on that side of the QEII. Developing country residential in that area isn't the best use of land IMO, so let the counties keep doing that.

The City has no say in the maintenance of the QEII south of the Henday, so the condition of the highway is solely up to the Province to deal with.

Discovery Business Park is on the West side of 2. Amazon has their small parcel facility there, not to be confused with the much larger facility for amazon on the west side (Border business park??)

Much larger facility (1,000,000 sq. ft.) on the east side (Border business park) in Leduc county. Parcel facility west of 2 larger warehouse east of 2.

Just a FYI. Discovery was approved by Leduc County before annexation, first as Crossroads Industrial Park, then Discovery Business Park
