The parking garage is an abomination of visual space. Not to mention it's crooked. As others have stated, thank goodness he did not win the arena mandate. We'd have the finest 1980s soviet arena this side of the motherland.

Ever see Hartford's arena? Ours could've ended up like that

Isn't in fantastic? That arena was part of a mall complex too! Imagine the possible similarities.

Can't believe the league lost the Whalers (long time fan of obsolete apparel, Hartford being the best logo tied with Nordiques).

Oh the reasons I could complain about the NHL because when I think hockey, I think Carolina. or Texas. or Arizona. or LA... twice.

I grew up with a friend named Lachlan Watson. You two together are Holmes and Watson, well sort of. Nevermind, forgive my offbeat comment. :/
Thanks, appreciate the kind words!

The parkade is a particularly ghastly, but fitting end for this project. Pictures from this afternoon:

Also, I highly doubt Vranich ever planned this building to actually be a hotel:

This is all very strange. It was originally proposed as an apartment building, then changed to a hotel, then back to an apartment? What's the logic here...

Maybe hedging his bets? With demand for travel (to cities like Hamilton, especially) probably facing a slow climb out of the pandemic, rentals make much more sense.

Plus he's got the other hotel on the go at Queen and King, and who knows whatever else is coming down the Vrancor pipeline.

Never made much sense as a hotel imho, so perhaps it was flipped to hotel to get easier green light on height increase (more density). Hoping some kind of miracle pulled out on that parking garage with finishes , maybe some glazing

Miracle is right, it's half the size of the lot. Was there a reason they didn't do an underground garage here? Maybe they can just cover it in mirrors so it's an illusion.

There is a big underground spring that carries water runoff from the mountain very close by (Spring St). I am not sure if this extends west of Ferguson, but might be the reason.

I wish the city could step in and force him to do better on the parking garage.

Hi Aurry, if you add an "h" right before the .jpg it will make the picture better fit to the forum page:

1a2b3c.jpg -> 1a2b3ch.jpg

Quite possibly the ugliest building in Southern Ontario, and the parking garage is the cherry on top. Sad.

I get we need housing. But if that housing is ugly, and not dignified then what's the point. We really need to stop building precast garbage. (Precast itself isn't bad all of the time, but in the cases in Hamilton is almost exclusively has been so)

I was looking at Halifax recently on streetview and their Skyscraper forum, and the developments in damn Halifax look great. There's one called "Velo" which I love and it's so simple and basic, but also really cool that I love. We need more stuff like that, and less cheap precast with a parking garage. That street corner will now forever be a dead zone.

Velo:

Look at the angled windows, bulbed sign, and they filled every single first floor unit with hip stores.

As someone who lives in the community that is devastating to hear. Sadly I fear you might be right, walking around that corner feels uncomfortable now.

During construction does the city have any control or input on quality/beautification? Can they enforce landscaping or painting missed areas?

is the separate parking garage a cost thing... like why wasn't it underground?
