Year of the big smoke
Welcome to an ode to my hometown. It's dirty, seedy, overcrowded, frustrating, often violent - and glorious. It's hard to get away.

It bristles with energy, multiculturalism and creativity; 40,000 protected buildings and 3000 awful tower blocks erected on bombsites, sometimes one and the same thanks to the work of the Twentieth Century Society, a new heritage lobby. History lies thick in its streets, and it's often hard to walk without a camera. Weigh out all the art, history, nightlife, food, freedom and buzz with the crime, income disparities, slate skies, interminable commutes and political corruption and you've got something of a love-hate relationship. Welcome to the beast.

1. There's an intimacy to the scale of the Big Smoke's streets...
