Strange...haven't noticed them much - last year was worse, but still I don't recall it as bad as most years in and around Winnipeg. But my skin has thickened from living in the Peg all those years ;-)

Thank god though, they're mostly only out in the evening in most places across the prairies.

I wouldn't consider the mosquitoes to be that bad in Calgary.

Sure if I am running through the grass at night I will probably stir up a bunch, but its not like I am rushing into my house at night and then killing a dozen that followed me in.

Yes, they are bad enough out here. Worse in the country, but annoying in the city too. I would say with the type of work I do, I probably spend more time outdoors than most Calgarians frequenting this thread, so I do have a good idea.

It is possible for Calgary to have lots of mosquitoes, you know. And with all the rain we just got, another bumper crop is most likely on the way.

ANYWAYS.............. I'm still fiddling with my url's and as soon as I can will post some pics of the beach. Should be a good season for some summertime fun in Manitoba

^I'm actually out in our backyard every day (okay, with the exception of Sunday which was just an ugly day)...as far as the rain goes, that's parts of Calgary that had a lot of rain.

There's actually "bug reports" on TheWeatherNetwork, that is somewhat useful:

http://www.theweathernetwork.com/bugreport/cancities_en

It's showing low to medium mosquitos across the country for the next few days, and high for a couple days in around NW Ontario...with, of course, the exception of Victoria and Van where mosquitos just aren't common.

Yeah, I'm sure those bug reports are as reliable as the weather forcasts; consistently off the mark and changing every hour

^well, at least it's better than a Winnipeger visiting Alberta and calling it bad, and an ex-Winnipeger living in Calgary saying it's not that bad

So, I'll go with their reports until someone finds something more "accurate", and say, mosquitos just aren't at the worst across the prairies.

Well come on guys... you must have some great pics of the beaches.

Don't let the negativity of some outsiders get in the way from showing what we've got!!

Don't worry, Newflyer, tomorrow morning I'm going up to Hillside Beach, and I'll take pictures of beaches with white sand and cabins with retro interiors that will make you dream of returning back to Manitoba.

Well the day at the beach was a bit of a bust, since it became pretty cloudy and windy after noon, but I took this photo early this morning...

Good thing I brought up something to read...

It looks nice.. do you have a cottage on this beach?

I have never been to Hillside Beach... is it a good place to go on a warm summer day? Give me some lowdown.

We're not on the beach, but about 300 feet from it, across the lane from where my great-great-grandfather built the first cabin at Hillside in the late 1910s.

The beach is nice, and gets much wider than what's in the foreground of that photo. I'd guess that Hillside is as long as Grand Beach. Nice white sand, and it's in a bit of bay, so the water is often calm. If you go there, it's just right off Hwy. 59 about five minutes south of the Victoria Beach turn-off.

I have seen it on the map and have often wondered about it. I expected it would be pretty nice, due to its location.

I have been to Victoria Beach .. and thought it would be similar.

300ft .... so you are pretty well on the beach.
Sounds like your family has a long history in the area.

Nice shot...If you're up there all the time, and the weather is less than perfect, you should try and get a shot of a thunderstorm rolling in. I recall on several occasions watching thunderstorms from beaches on Lake Winnipeg and Manitoba - and it's actually one of the coolest places to watch from...great picture potential!

OKay ... here we are --- Canada Day long weekend.

I am sure Grand Beach will be the 3rd largest community in the province this weekend. This is one of the biggest beach weekends in Manitoba. Hopefully there are some great posts to go with them.

Next week I'll be back in the Peg. I can't wait!!

I'll post my beach pics on my return.

Here are some of my beach photos taken during my trip to Winnipeg last week. These were from the west shore of the lake, mostly Matlock and Winnipeg Beach.
Absolutely beautiful lakeshore!!

Its been one of the warmest summers in years...

I can't believe you guys havn't snapped any shots of beach(es) around Winnipeg. Quit holding out on me damnit .. ... I'm stuck in Alberta where there aren't any descent .. yet world class beaches. I miss it.

Here is one I took of the lake one morning.. during my trip a couple weeks ago.

Another one of the Marina.

Well I hope there'd be a small handful of days of good beach weather before fall... so if you were really inspired you still have a chance.

If not ... than you definately have to hit it up next summer.
