Hadn't heard of this one--the building (two in from the left corner) was once an A&P, which was there into the
'40s. Not sure when it became the Premier, but it was still listed at 3716 in 1956; by 1960 it was a Mannings
coffee shop.

This is a view of Main looking north from Ninth to where Spring and Main converge. . . . . We had seen these kiosks in earlier photos but I don't remember seeing them this late. Signs visible include the Los Angeles City Club (833 South Spring) and the California Bank in the 810 South Spring Building. Pedestrians are waiting in the street for a streetcar.

Bifrayrock is correct, the venue is being turned into a haunted house. I plan on going in the next few weeks, I've always wanted to go inside and never had the chance. Hopefully some of the venue can be seen under the props/cobwebs and lighting effects, I'd hate to imagine a nice interior all covered up by black plastic sheeting or faux stone walls.

Oh THAT signage ! I was all over the 1963 grand opening of the Granada Hills Food Giant (and J.J.Newberrys-complete with now endangered cottontop marmosets in their Pet Dept)- Plenty of celebs on hand- such as original Cleo - the Basset Hound and Timmy from Lassie (John Provost )- who wore a crazy amount of makeup-Got my palm stroked ever-so-smoothly when I reached the end of a line to shake his hand! Dang-I could tell he also had custom made denims n tailored checkered shirt - Almost had me swooning-Best memory of Food Giant were the jumbo buttermilk donuts with the crunchy center knot !

How many Grand Openings is allowed? Undated Grand "Re-Re" Opening Merlo's Market at 7919 Beverly Blvd. "Repeated by public demand!"(?) Many will know this building as it is virtually next door to the Fairfax Theater (separated by an alleyway). This store remained as a market until 1980 when it became "Shoe Pavilion." Shoe Pavilion lasted for 28 years. In approximately 2010 it became a Goodwill. The corner of the building to the left of the Farifax theater in "relatively" recent image.

Looking west across the Los Angeles River into Griffith Park, 1961

Looking west across the Los Angeles River into Griffith Park at the future site of the Golden State Freeway (I-5) and the CA-134 Freeway. San Fernando Boulevard and Glenoaks Boulevard cut across the southwest area of Glendale east of the river. Are we looking at Rodger Young Village? Was it still standing in 1961? I hope so. My Uncle Art and Aunt Henriette lived for a time at Rodger Young Village during the post-war housing crunch. Fond memories.

Sopas EJ identified the address as Fairfax and Sunset.

I like this picture of the same building, ca. 1940 too.

There once was a grocery market about a mile south of this market at approximately 370 N. Fairfax. It may be currently occupied by a charity. The 1987 directory lists E & S Grocery Mkt, but it is likely the market had many different names. I was told long ago by others that before THE war, they fondly remembered shopping at the the market as part of a trip to the movies at the Fairfax or Esquire (before Canter's). This was when sawdust covered the floors of many indoor-outdoor markets. I am told that the building was also used as a location for movie and television production, including Steve Martin's "Dead Men DWP," but am unable to confirm this with usual sources. I have also heard similar production occurred at Merlo's (see above). Additional information, including a photo or two would be appreciated.
