I don't get what's going on with this project. The site plan was approved, and the school moved into their temporary location for construction. But two new site plans were recently filed - one for the new school and one for the residential tower.

So I'm just gonna say it: this is Jester 2.0. It will be out of style as soon as it's finished.

Some may consider it out of style before it's finished...

I personally think it's cool to use Kowloon Walled City as a model for new student housing structures.

I just hope no drunk students think it would be fun to jump from the balcony that overlaps with the balcony below. Eeeek.

I had to google Kowloon Walled City and holy ***. It looks like something out of a dystopian fever dream.

There's a neat thread on the Walled City of Kowloon here. Lots of photos, videos and stories from former residents.

FAA permit for the crane filed today - 390 feet. I don't remember how many this was supposed to have, but I would guess 2.

Work Schedule: 02/01/2022 to 01/31/2024

Sounds like preliminary work to relocate/rebuild the church and school facilities is underway.

St. Austin Catholic Church breaks ground on redesigned campus

Quote:
AUSTIN, Texas — The St. Austin Catholic Church in Austin broke ground on its redevelopment project on Monday...

The new church campus will also include new parish offices and a rectory for the church’s Paulist priests.
The property that the school currently sits on will become the site of a “downtown residential tower” for UT Austin students and other Austin residents.

Utility work moved to the other side of the street. Seems like between 2-3pm they hit a water pipe. Spewing onto the trees and sidewalk adjacent to the Hillel.

Utility work moved again. Now in the 21st/San Antonio intersection and continuing to the Nueces alley. Right next to the LDS property.

Looks to me as if this will be the last of the utility work. Each phase took them a week or two, so I expect the roadway interruptions to end by Thanksgiving. Could be wrong, though.

Greystar has closed on $600 million in financing for three mixed-use student housing developments located in Texas and Maryland. Construction on all projects began in October with completion scheduled for fall 2024.

Developments include Union on San Antonio, a $171 million, 991-bed high-rise being built through a public-private partnership with the St. Austin Catholic Parish. The project is located one block from the University of Texas at Austin campus and will include a new Catholic parish, rectory and K-8 school for $32 million.

Page designed the student housing tower, which will feature shared amenities including a swimming pool, rooftop deck and fitness center. Greystar’s Austin team will oversee the construction of the project with Hensel Phelps as general contractor.

Utility work is done now. I see some of the plastic jersey barriers stored in the alleyway btwn San Antonio & Guad, south of 21st St. Though that may just be because the staging/parking for the project is currently in the garage adjacent to there, and not for future use.
