Food Network Canada - favourite restaurants in Hamilton

Over the past decade, Hamilton, Ontario has quickly developed a reputation as a foodie destination. Lovingly referred to as the Hammer, Steeltown, and occasionally even Toronto’s Brooklyn, Hamilton’s affordability and proximity to Toronto have had new homeowners and restaurateurs alike flocking to the city. There’s been a steady stream of new restaurants, bars and cafes popping up alongside the long-standing restaurants that put Hamilton on the map long before it was cool.
  • Born & Raised: 224 James St N
  • Brothers Grimm Bistro: 193 King St E
  • Bring Me Some: 638 Concession St
  • Electric Diner: 96 George St
  • La Luna: Five locations across Hamilton
  • Mai Pai: 631 Barton St E
  • Marias Tortas Jalisco: 438 Hwy 8
  • McQueen’s Banh Mi Viet: 103 Queen St N
  • Namu: 186 King St W, Dundas
  • Saint James Espresso Bar & Eatery: 170 James St N
  • The French: 37 King William St
  • Tomah: 242 King St W

There's a rumour that the Cat N Fiddle has a new owner and will be reopening. Anyone know more about that?

I had heard this too, but the building is still for sale I think.

I don't see it listed anywhere anymore. Maybe it sold?

Edit: From what I can gather online, it may have sold two weeks ago. There does seem to be some activity around the building, possible renovations?

Apparently the former Ray's Place on Dundurn has new owners. The Berkeley North owners will be opening a new place called BNLocal there.

Nice to see some of the restaurants that permanently closed because of the lockdowns (Cat N Fiddle and now Ray's Place) opening up under new owners. Some life seems to be coming back to the city, something the covid lockdowns destroyed. Brighter days ahead!

Radius is moving to Hess Village in June. Not sure if this was posted before... I seem to recall reading something about it. 18 Hess St. South, where Ora used to be.

I can't imagine something won't replace the James/Augusta location. Too much market there to ignore, with more households coming in the near future.

Permanently closed’: Buffalo Wild Wings shutters Ancaster location

Signage on the facade of the Golf Links Road eatery was removed in recent days

Fallon Hewitt, Spectator Reporter, June 20, 2023

An Ancaster chain eatery known for its chicken wings and cold pints has closed its doors.

Buffalo Wild Wings appears to have shuttered its Golf Links Road location in recent days, with photos posted to social media showing that the signage on the facade of the restaurant removed and a note posted on the door noting that spot “is permanently closed.”

The Spectator has reached out to the company for comment on the closure, which comes just a month after the chain abruptly closed its Stoney Creek spot in early May.

Two italian places opening at once downtown.

Also -anyone know anything about the restaurant opening at King William and John? Crews have been in there for months working. I imagine they are getting close to completion.

I'm not sure if you're referring to Le Tambour as Italian, but it's since been corrected that it is French.

Ahh, you are correct. Totally forgot about that since they haven't released much, but the name kind of gives it away.

See that Union Chicken, Backfill of Ray's on James N, now also closing. Really gotta be on King William!

Damn, they really didn't last long.

I think we still need a larger population to support a larger number of restaurants downtown. Cobalt should really give a shot in the arm to the stretch.

That's great news and funny back story. The new owners were told they couldn't use the same name. They were going to use a "play" on the name but when they checked, the cat and fiddle wasn't trademarked anymore and dissolved, so they just went the original name. There will be music too again, so that's a good thing.

Not sure what's going on with the bar/restaurant that's been under development for awhile (diagonally across the way with the patio), but that would really round out the Augusta strip.

Glad it's not changing names, need that brand recognition haha. I'm sure the opening weekend is going to be packed. Looking forward to enjoying a pint there again!

Exciting times here in Ancaster... Chipotle is opening up on Martindale in front of Home Depot, shared pad with Starbucks. Looks to be the first Chipotle outside of Toronto in Canada (save perhaps their market test site in London).

There has been a Chipotle on Dundas near Winston Churchill for many many years. My kids are going to like this news.
