If I was in charge of Yhm, I would be all over this release, publically inviting all airlines to divert excess to Hamilton. Apparently we can do 4MM passengers per year and we are likely less than 1MM.

The biggest driver of this is staff shortages, including border control for both the Canadian and US departures.
Hamilton can't solve that.

Well we do have border staff that cannot be working full time, I would suggest the same for all ops roles at YHM. Not suggesting take on 3MM more, but for sure they could be strategic in targeting volume. Maybe give Play Air some competition.

YHM has opened a 4th lane for departure screening and the line ups are much shorter right now. We will see how March break does for line ups.

Customs at YHM goes very quickly. There is always sufficient staffing as this is the large, 24/7/365 commercial customs operations and there is always staff there. The problem is the small customs hall that has trouble handling more than 2 aircraft at a time.

2023 Weekly service from YHM

58 Swoop
14 Westjet
7 Play
5 Lynx

84 Flights total

Maybe more coming?

Westjet had 3 flights a day pre Covid so Westjet and Lynx almost come up to pre Covid service to Calgary.

What were the total daily flights before the pandemic? I think someone noted that here recently, but I'm too lazy to look.

Thanks! So passenger flights will be nearly back to the level planned for summer 2020 (85).

Cargo flights are probably a lot more frequent now.

This is interesting....

Swoop uploaded Hamilton (YHM) - Orlando (MCO) starting 06MAY23 running 2x weekly throughout the summer.

Orlando (SFB) is still up on the website at 3x weekly...

Wondering if MCO is replacing SFB...

I wonder if SWOOP will expand destinations to the US. I would love to see Pheonix and LA (LGB instead of LAX perhaps?) added as options, perhaps other popular tourism cities in the US as well like Nashville or Austin.. But I might be getting hopeful haha.

How are passenger numbers calculated? Incoming and outgoing?

Those 85 flights, does that translate to 85 incoming as well?

2022 should be a strong year 2023 may just hit that million dollar mark.

Couple of points...

85 flights means 85 departures. There is the same number of arrivals -- therefore if you're talking about "movements" the total would be double (170).

Swoop is leaving SFB and moving to MCO. Additionally Toronto-Orlando is gone (Westjet already flies that route and they seem to be moving toward not overlapping their brands understandably).

thanks for the response. A couple of wish list items from my own and friends experiences. I hope mgmt has a plan to wisely use AIF revenue and parking revenue.

- larger departure area, better sound system. It can get very crowded in there.

- arrivals, more and better washroom facilities,

- arrival times the roadway leading to the terminal is clogged with buses, taxis and friends waiting to pick up others. A mess.

The airport just needs an entirely new terminal building. The current one is a hodge-podge of ramshackle additions and is just generally terrible.

Need something like London Ontario's terminal. It even has proper jetways.

Westjet Sunwing deal

Here's a snippet from todays announcement from TC via CP24 news. "The transport minister has attached conditions to the acquisition that include extending Sunwing packages to five new cities, maintaining capacity on the most affected routes and keeping both a vacations business head office in Toronto and a regional one in Montreal for at least five years.

Among the other conditions are a requirement to improve “regional connectivity” and baggage handling, boost net employment at Sunwing's Toronto office and “gradually” end its seasonal plane-leasing practice to protect jobs in Canada."

I wonder if we'll see year round flights from sunwing out of YHM...
