STOCKHOLM 2014 – Nightsky’s weekend in the Swedish capital

Population: 910 000 (urban 1 400 000, metro 2 192 000)
http://www.worldtravelimages.net/Stockholm.html

I visited Stockholm, the capital of Sweden and Scandinavia’s largest city, in September 2014, for one Friday night and two shining weekend days. It is only the 3rd time in the capital for me, despite I am a Swede. I made the trip as an extension to a 3 day workshop/conference in nearby Södertälje. Stockholm is a beautiful and green city with much history with its core situated on island, always with proximity to water.

Let’s not start with the city center for instance: Let’s start with the Globe and its views to make an overview of the city.

THE GLOBE:

Globen, since 2009 officially the Ericsson Globe (formerly Stockholm Globe Arena), is located in the district Johanneshov, just south of Södermalm from Skanstullsbron, a tall bridge. The Globe is a large arena for sports (mostly hockey) and big concerts (rock concerts and Eurovision). The Globe is the world´s largest spherical building and was built in 1988 and opened in 1989. The diameter of the structure is 110m, and it is 85 meters to the top of Globen, and since 2010 you can use the Skyview, two external elevators to the top to watch views over Stockholm. In September 2014 I visited the Skyview.

The Globe, the world's largest spherical building, and the annex on a sunny September daIy. The Globe represents the sun in the Sweden Solar System, the world's largest scale model of the Solar System.

The Globe with the tracks for the two elevators that takes visitors to the top with the Skyview. It is 85m to the top and 605 000 cubic meters in size.

THE VIEWS FROM THE SKYVIEW, GLOBEN:

Part of Globen's spherical roof and view towards Södermalm and central Stockholm.

Looking North: Södermalm, Johanneshov and central Stockholm. Skyline from the left: Söder Torn, Klara kyrka, Skatteskrapan, Folksamhuset, Katarinakyrkan, several churches are seen in the background and the bridges in the front is Skanstullsbron and Johanneshovsbron.

Looking North, a closer look on the skyline, from the left: Söder Torn (Södermalm), Riddarholmskyrkan (Riddarholmen), Wenner Gren Center (Norrmalm), Klara kyrka (Norrmalm), Skrapan (Södermalm).

Kista (far Northern suburb) skyline in the distance beyond central Stockholm, seen from Skyview on top of Ericsson Globe. The skyscraper to the left is Kista Science Tower (117.2m, 30 floors) and the one to the left is Victoria Tower (117.4m, 33 floors). Victoria Tower hosts a Scandic Hotel and was completed in 2011. Kista Towers will be completed in 2015, with the tallest tower second tallest in Sweden (120m, 35 floors).

Hammarby district with Hammarbytornet, Hammarby sjöstad, Park Inn hotel, Lake Mälaren, Nacka.

Tele2 Arena is a multi-purpose stadium that was built in 2010-13 as a part of the Stockholm Globe City. It has capacity for 33 000 during football games and up to 40 000 people during concerts.

Johanneshov seen from the top of Globen, with the tracks of the two Skyview gondolas in the front.

The church towers are Högalidskyrkan on Södermalm and the skyscraper is DN-skrapan on Kungsholmen.

The roof of the Globe, the center of the spherical structure, looking towards the Hammarby district and Nacka suburb

The skyline of Kungsholmen and Norrmalm with the famous City Hall to the left. Strangely the water of Mälaren is not visible but there are lots of water around the buildings, it is situated beneath the buildings.

The other gondola seen from the one I was in with views of Södermalm in the background.

Johanneshov and Årstaviken

The bay Årstaviken with Lilheholmsbron and a train bridge. To the right is Hornstull, part of Södermalm and the island in the middle is Årsta holmar.

VIEWS FROM SKANSTULLSBRON:

Skanstullsbron is a high bridge that takes transports, trains and pedestrians from Södermalm to Johanneshov over Årstaviken. There are very nice views from the bridge, especially over the bay Årstaviken, Södermalm, Johanneshov and Hammarby. It was opened for traffic in 1946, delayed by the second world war. I walked along the 574m.

Kaknästornet, Sweden's tallest TV tower (for many years the tallest structure in Sweden) in front of Djurgåden, the popular tourist island.

Götgatan with Skatteskrapan with subway trains passing by underneath Åhléns

Hammarbytornet in Hammarby reminds of Kaknästornet.

Södermalm skyline from Skanstullsbron, dominated by Folksamskrapan to the right. Skanstullsbron has a pedestrian walkway.

Skyline of Liljeholmskajen in the outskirts, looking to the West. The black highrise is called Kajen 4 (75m, 24 floors) and was drawn by Gert Wingårdh. Kajen 4 was planned for over 10 years before it was built, completed in 2014. 3 other "skyscrapers" are also u/c there.

Views to the East, from the left: Danviksklippan highrises, Hammarbystaden (front), Hammarby sjöstad (middle) and Henriksdal (Nacka)

Thanks!

The Globe is the most famous symbol of Stockholm together with the City Hall and the Royal Castle.

Thanks. There will be a lot of streetscape pics in this thread, behind church towers and inside churches! I don't have good pics from near the TV towers though they are in the outskirts (and only have a bad one from 2003).

Now the city center:

NORRMALM - part 1
Sergels Torg, Hötorget, Norrmalms Torg, Drottninggatan, Sveavägen, Kungsgatan, Olof Palmes Plats, Tegnérlunden, S:Ta Clara Kyrka, Klarakvartéren, Central Station

Norrmalm is the district, north of Mälaren (norr=north), there the most central part of the city center is situated. It is the most shopping oriented and commercial district with many department stores, like NK and Pub, and companies. Many of the most famous buildings and squares are situated here, many of them concentrated of the mostly pedestrian Drottninggatan, a long shopping street that stretches from the Old Town to Vasastan. The central station, where we arrived by train, is also situated on Norrmalm. Norrmalm is the most modern of the districts in central Stockholm, many old buildings where torn down in the 1960s to make way for grey modernist buildings, that is considered a big mistake in Swedish architecture history. Especially around Sergels torg and Hötorget, where you find the five so called Hötorgsskraporna. At the major street Kungsgatan you find the much older and more beautiful Kungstornen, considered to be among the first skyscrapers in Europe. Sveavägen and Olof Palmes Gata, where the Swedish prime minister was shot to death in 1986, and the minister Anna Lindh in 2003, is situated in Norrmalm, as well as the tomb of Olof Palme at Adolf Fredriks church. Kungsträdgården is one of the few parks in central Stockholm, a place for many events.

Sergels Torg, named after the artist Johan Tobias Sergel, is perhaps the most famous square in Sweden. its 60s modernist architecture has became a symbol for the dull architecture that has replaced historic buildings in many Swedish cities. Despite that it is a very popular place with its fountain, its sculpture, departments stores and the five skyscrapers. When TV is broadcasting modern views from Stockholm, they often show Sergels Torg. On the East part of the heavily trafficated square is a large circular fountain. In the middle of the fountain stands Edvin Öhrström's 37m high glass pillar from 1974. You also find the House of Culture (Kulturhuset), the large department store Åhléns City and the large Galleria shopping galleria.

Hötorgsskraporna is the name of the 5 so called “skyscrapers” situated between Sergels Torg and Hötorget, part of Hötorgscity. They are not really tall though, just 61m tall each, but were called skyscrapers since they where the first buildings that resembled American skyscrapers in style.

"Plattan" is the lowered part of Sergels torg, a large underground hub with stores and restaurants close to the subway entrance that has been infamous for its many drug addicts and dealers.

Kulturhuset (House of Culture), Sergels torg. Built in 1974, it houses theaters, cinemas, restaurants, exhibition rooms, a concert hall and a library. It was one of the main inspirations for Centre Pompidou in Paris and has became a controversial symbol for the rise of modernism.

HÖTORGET:

Hötorget (Hay market square) with the Royal Concert Hall and Hötorgsskraporna. Every day, except on sundays, this city square has a fruit and vegetable market. Here you also find the PUB department store, Filmstaden Sergel with its large multiscreen cinema, the fountain Orfeusbrunnen and Hötorgshallen, an underground market hall. Hötorgscity is the office and shopping complex dominated by Hötorgsskarporna.

People from the Middle East sell chanterelles at the market, which they announce loudly.

Urban scene of Hötorgscity with the 5 office towers Hötorgsskraporna, the sculpture and the Concert Hall.

Kungliga Konserthuset (The Royal Concert Hall), Hötorget. This light blue neo-classicist building is the main hall for orchestral music in Stockholm. It is home to the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and the place where the award ceremonies of the Nobel Prize and the Polar Music Prize are held.

PUB, a classic department store at Hötorget. It opened in different buildings from 1916-1959, all drawn by famous architects. In 2006 it was transformed into a department store for fashion.

Gallerian, a wellknown shopping galleria near Sergels torg, between Hamngatan (picture), Regeringsgatan and Kungsgatan with 85 stores. It opened in 1976, reopend in 2004 and rebuilt in 2011. In 1951-68, 45 old buildings were torn down to make way for the galleria, known as one of the most controversial parts of Swedish building history.

KLARAKVARTÉREN AND KLARABERGSGATAN:

Åhléns City, Sweden's largest department store, has 5 floors and was inaugurated in 1964. It is the anchor store of the Swedish Åhléns store chain. Here seen from Klarabergsgatan towards Sergels torg.

S:ta Clara Church (in Swedish Klarakyrkan or Sankta Clara Kyrka) is at 116m Scandinavia's 2nd tallest church. Today it is surrounded by the modernist buildings at Sergels torg and Klarabergsgatan, so it can only be seen from afar. Construction of the current church started in 1572 by Hendrik van Huwen. Built in red brick with a copper roof.

The interior of S:ta Klara Church. I listened to an organ concert to have a break from the bustling Norrmalm streets.

S:ta Clara Church seen from Klarabergsgatan. The so called Klarakvartéren (Clara quarters), situated between the Central Station and Sergels torg, are known as one of the most extensive demolishment projects in Swedish history, replacing old historic buildings with large modernist buildings.

World Trade Center Stockholm was built in and is situated at Klarabergsviadukten above the Central Station. It was built in 1989 and drawn by Ralph Erskine. There is a large atrium inside and it has an office space of 45 000 m².

The large and futuristic atrium of WTC Stockholm with its panorama elevators.

Stockholm Central Station opened in 1871 and is Scandinavia's largest railway station (200 000 travellers a day). It is situated between Tegelbacken and Klarabergsviadukten in the center of Norrmalm. It has several restaurants and stores inside, just like most other stations. The main entrance is at Centralplan, next to Vasagatan.

The clock "Centralens gamla klocka" with SJ:s golden logo

Stockholm Central Station's Centralhallen, opened in the 1930s and designed by Hugo Zettervall. It has several restaurants and stores inside, just like most other stations. The main entrance is at Vasagatan.

Stockholm Continental is a redevelopment of the Hotel Continental, an ugly buildings that hides the Klara church opposite the central station. This new building complex u/c will have a design hotel with skybar, apartments, a metro station, upmarket restaurants. Despite the new design I don't think it will be that much more beautiful in the future.

Stockholm Waterfront is a congress centre, hotel and parking garage. It was completed in 2011 and is situated between the City Hall on Kungsholmen and the Central Station on Norrmalm. Waterfront includes a Radisson hotel and has a capacity of 3000 congress participants.

Stockholm Waterfront from Klarabergsviadukten. It was designed by White architects. To the left is Waterfront Building and to the right is Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel with 414 rooms.

SÖDERMALM:

Södermalm is the populated island, just south of Lake Mälaren (söder=south), Gamla Stan and Norrmalm. But parts of Södermalm, especially northern part feels pretty urban and Södermalm has its own city centers. Södermalm is consider to be a place for elites and hipsters, it is considered to be a bit snobbish by other citizens and the district even has its own accent. Södermalm has good restaurants, nice galleries, movie theaters and night clubs. But there are also average apartment block districts at "Söder", the finest residents are around Hornsgatan. Many of Stockholm´s most wellknown highrises are situated on Södermalm. There are also tall rocks right beside Mälaren with views over Stockholm and many streets are hilly. Hornsgatan and Götgatan are the main streets and around the square Medborgarplatsen in the center of Södermalm there are many pubs and nightclubs.

Götgatan is the hilly main street and hub of entertainment of Södermalm in North-South direction. Looking towards the Globe, Skrapan, Medborgarhuset and Lillienhoffpalatset.

Gondolen, the skybridge with views of Stockholm. The famous outdoor elevator Katarinahissen takes you up there. Here in 2014 it was under renovation.

View from Gondolen at Katarinahissen. The rocks seen in the picture also offers great views. Below the rocks is one of Stockholm´s most trafficated roads, Stadsgårdsleden, from wich you can take the Katarina elevator up to the roads on higher levels.

Medborgarplatsen (formerly Södra Bantorget) is a square in the center of Södermalm, popular for speeches and demonstrations. Dubbed Medis by locals, this square is pretty modern and here you find the Södertorn tower, Medborgarhuset (with a library, a theater and Debaser nightclub), the Lillienhoff Palace, several restaruants, the markethall, a supermarket and the Grand Mosque.

Lillienhoff Palace, Medborgarplatsen. Built in 1670 by a noble merchant.

Söderhallarna is a market hall, a cinema complex and a 3-storey shopping galleria.

Söder Torn (Southern Tower). At 83 m and 24 floors and built in 1997, this postmodern highrise is one of Stockholm´s best designed "skyscrapers". Here you see it from the modern park Fatbursparken next to Medborgarplatsen.

Björns Trädgård (Bjorn's Garden), a small hilly park right opposite Medborgarplatsen from Götgatan. Here you find a skate park and a large mosque.

Södermalms Moské, the largest mosque in Stockholm, was built in 1903 as Katarina electric power station and became a mosque in 2000.

Skrapan. The most famous skyscraper in Stockholm was the tallest building in Sweden between 1959-64. It was built as Skatteskrapan (Tax Revenue Tower) in 1959, but was converted to students apartments and changed name to just Skrapan in 2007. A new, 27th floor that holds a skybar, was also added on top of the building, making it 86m tall instead of 81, as well as a 3-storey shopping galleria called Skrapan, on the ground floors new glass atrium. It is probably the city's most famous highrise and is protected as a cultural landmark.

HORNSGATAN, Mariatorget and Högalidsgatan:
These are some of my old pics from 2010. The weather was not so good back them:

Högalidskyrkan, the twin tower church on top of a hill on Södermalm. It is built in national romantic style, which means it got inspiration from older Swedish styles.

Maria Magdalena Kyrka (St Mary's Church) from 1430 is situated on Hornsgatan

Mariatorget, a wellknown small square at Hornsgatan, a very calm and relaxed place with a nice fountain. Doves like to gather here.

Thanks! Now back to Norrmalm:

NORRMALM - part 2

DROTTNINGGATAN:

Drottninggatan literally means Queen Street and is one of the most importants streets in central Stockholm, a long pedstrian shopping street where you find many popular brand stores, pubs and restaurants. It begins at the end of Gamla Stan, passes Hötorget and major attractions in Norrmalm and ends in the hilly park Observatorielunden Vasastan in the North. The North part, in the picture, is the most hilly part.

Adolf Fredriks kyrka, the church where the murdered prime minister Olof Palme is buried in its churchyard. The church was inaugurated in 1774 and built in Gustavian style with rococo elements.

Drottninggatan: View southwards towards Katarina Kyrka from the high Northern end at Observatorielunden.

TEGNÉRLUNDEN:

Tegnérlunden is a small, hilly and quiet park at the border of northernmost Norrmalm and Vasastaden, just one block west of Drottninggatan. This very prominenent sculpture is the legendary Swedish author August Strindberg. There is also an Astrid Lindgren sculpture that I didn't see.

Residential buildingS at Tegnérlunden

Clarion Hotel Sign, a futuristic hotel at Norra Bantorget, is Stockholm's largest hotel. It has 558 rooms and opened in 2008. It was designed by Gert Wingårdh.

NORRA BANTORGET AND OLOF PALMES GATA:

KUNGSGATAN:

Kungsgatan towards Kungstornen, Sweden's first "skyscrapers".

Kungstornen were built in 1924 and 1925 on each side of Kungsgatan, as Sweden's first and highest "skyscrapers". They are 61 and 60m tall and have 17 and 18 floors. They were designed by two different architects and were inspired by the highrise architecture of South Manhattan.

NYBROPLAN AND BERZELII PARK:

Nyrobplan, intersection of Birger Jarlsgatan, Strandvägen, Nybrogatan and Hamngatan. At the border to Östermalm.

Kungliga Dramatiska Teatern (Royal Dramatic Theatre), locally called "Dramaten", is situated at the border between Östermalm and Norrmalm, at Nybroplan in the intersection Strandvägen/Birger Jarlsgatan, opposite Berzelli park. The current building was completed in 1908 and renovated in 2007. It has a capacity of 1500 people on 6 different stages. Carl Milles has made the theatrical decorations and Fredrik Liljekvist designed the building.

Norrmalmstorg, a square between Hamngatan and Smålandsgatan, has been internationally famous for the therm "Stockholm syndrome" during the so called "Norrmalmtorgsdramat" bank robbery in 1973, where the hostage had sympathy for the robbers. The drama took place at what was then Kreditbanken, the light building to the right. Many trams passes here and the Swedish HQ for Danske Bank is located here.

During my visit another Norrmalmstorgsdrama took place: chaos after a traffic accident!

HAMNGATAN:

Hamngatan has several department stores: Here NK

NK (Nordiska Kompaniet) is Sweden's most famous and exclusive department store. The main entrance here is seen from Hamngatan. NK opened in 1915 and was created by Josef Sachs, who was inspired by department stores in New York and Berlin. The logo has remained intact since 1902.

NK:s rotating logo has became a symbol of Stockholm

NK atrium, inspired by international department stores. In the 1960s and 70s. NK was first in the world with its own credit card. On September 10th 2003, the former Swedish foreign minister Anna Lindh was stabbed to death in the store!
