Random photos, taken July 3, 2023. My partner and I had the day off from work Monday and decided to explore LA via public transportation... we wanted to have lunch at Gjelina in Venice, that was our main goal on this excursion. Parking can be a hassle in Venice, hence our use of public transportation. We later hung out in Santa Monica and then Little Tokyo.

We could have walked to Venice from the Downtown Santa Monica station of the E Line but we decided to catch the number 18 Big Blue Bus to get to Abbot Kinney.

Abbot Kinney used to be a little bit more artsy and bohemian about 30 years ago; now it's all gentrified and a bit corporate bougie.

so glad to see the Metro Rail expansions. I rode the (former Gold line) A Line when my brother and his family lived in Monrovia. With that connection it didn't feel like my brother was stuck way out in the SGV suburbs

Random photos taken today, Sunday, 7.23.2023. We basically went independent bookstore hopping, the first one in Pasadena, the 2nd and 3rd one in Long Beach. We both bought a few books, too. We spent the rest of our afternoon in Long Beach and had a meal before going home.

Just two pictures I took this afternoon, Friday, 8.4.2023...

The house used in the film "Pee-wee's Big Adventure." People have been putting flowers in the fence as a memorial for Paul Reubens AKA Pee-wee Herman, who died just some days ago.

And then dinner at one of our fave places...

And then my camera battery died. I realize I haven't charged it in a long time.

A couple of photos taken today, 8.15.2023...

The house used in the opening credits of "Mama's Family," Seasons 3 through 6. "Well GOOD LORD, Vinton!!!" It's actually just a block or two from the house used in "Pee Wee's Big Adventure," and about a half-mile from where I live.

Taco Tuesday!

Grilled chicken on the left, nopalitos on the right.

And now for some more very random photos, taken over the last several days... all spent in our own local area.

Last week, we had a lot of monsoonal moisture. It sprinkled in the SGV... had my car washed after it was all over.

Phoenix is sort of an LA institution; the original opened up in LA's Chinatown in the 1960s. It now has several locations in the SGV, one in Orange County, and a new location in San Diego. We went to the South Pasadena location.

We had Hainan chicken. Yum!

Sunday brunch...

We each had a rosé.

And then I had a French 75, and he had a Dark and Stormy.

Mixed nuts on the left, olives and feta on the right.

We also each had a Cuban sandwich.

You mean like this?

The Friday before the tropical storm...

The Sunday of the tropical storm... we were concerned... but we went out for brunch anyway, and even hung out at a coffeehouse. So what if it was raining. And the storm ended up not being so bad in our area anyway.

This doesn't look like much, but this was a very tasty omelet---Fresh smoked turkey breast, oven roasted tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach, feta, and avocados.

^We went out to dinner Saturday night before the storm at a new steakhouse in El Segundo called Porterhouse. It was fantastic! Afterwards, we stopped by Jame for a negroni and the restaurant was almost empty... which is very unusual. We asked what was up and they said they had 70+ cancellations. Don't understand why so many people cancelled Saturday night dinner reservations when it wasn't supposed to start raining until Sunday.

Ah, Porterhouse! Thanks for mentioning it. Maybe we'll check it out when we're in El Segundo again. It's been a number of months since we were last there but we really like going to Tapizôn.

Yeah, Saturday evening did seem kind of dead, though not entirely. We figured people were hunkering down in preparation for the storm. Our regular go-to pub (Lucky Baldwin's Trappiste), which usually has a good number of people on Saturday nights, was kind of dead, and then by 9pm it was just me, my partner, and one other customer---and they close at 1am on Saturdays.

As we enter the dog days of summer in the LA area, my partner and I went to the final night of Chinatown Summer Nights, a fun dance event, and an event we've gone to twice before (it was canceled during the pandemic). Fun DJs from local radio station KCRW. On this night (Saturday, 8.26.23) it was DJ Novena Carmel, daughter of Sly Stone of Sly and the Family Stone, spinning some fun tunes.

So, some very random photos of the last night of Chinatown Summer Nights, and walking around Chinatown.

Interested in Chinatown Summer Nights?

It's a fun event. And it's free. My partner and I were last there in 2018 or '19? Then the pandemic hit, and they didn't have it for a few years.

Last week was my partner's birthday week... so we did some stuff in celebration of his birthday. Mainly did a museum day during the week---so, lots of photos of artwork/museum displays.

We went to see the Keith Haring exhibit. This exhibit really made me appreciate his art more; I used to think of him just doing those human figures, and figures of dogs... but I learned from this exhibit that a lot of his art was actually very subversive, and I love subversive art. Because he did most of his art during the very conservative President Reagan era, a lot of his art deals with and are commentaries on homophobia, racism, white supremacy, imperialism, excessive capitalism, and right-wing Christianity, among other things. And up until now, most of his stuff I've seen through prints... but seeing his actual paintings up close and the detail, really made me appreciate him more as an artist.

Yes indeed!

Sunday, 9.10.23, my partner and I went to the Getty Center specifically to see the "Alfredo Boulton: Looking at Venezuela, 1928–1978" photography exhibit. It was very interesting. I only took a few pictures of his photos because I had trouble photographing them. And of course I took random photos around the Getty Center too... we didn't stay there too long. We've already seen their permanent collections.

This was an art installation called "Woshaa'axre Yaang'aro (Looking Back Toward Los Angeles)," done by Tongva artist Mercedes Dorame. The Tongva of course are the native people of the Los Angeles area. It's supposed to be representations of abalone, which have long held a prominent role in the survival of the Tongva people and the ecology of the California coast.
