First look: Now owned by Robert Rodriguez, old Jovita’s restaurant to become apartments

by: Austin Business Journal, Erin Edgemon

AUSTIN (Austin Business Journal) — A multifamily development is headed for the site of the old Jovita’s restaurant in South Austin a few years after it was acquired by high-profile Austin filmmaker Robert Rodriguez.

Chameleon Cos. is developing the four-story apartment building at 1613 and 1615 S. First St. to have 41 to 44 units. It’s in a popular but still up-and-coming area. The project is next door to Fresa’s Chicken Al Carbon — another business Rodriguez helped get off the ground — and near other eateries such as Polvo’s Mexican Restaurant as well as a handful of food trucks.

It's kind of a shame most of the *really* good legit Tex-Mex/Interior Mexican spots on South First haven't made it. Austin honestly has a real lack of those.

We excel in upscale Mexican and drunk-frat/sorority mexican... but South First and CC were kind of the two corridors for the really good stuff and we're losing a lot of them which is both sad and kind of shocking. They should all just do what Polvos did and start charging Yuppies 25 bucks for what had previously been an 8 dollar pitcher of frozen margaritas.

I saw this on Chameleon's site a few weeks ago. Rendering by Bercy Chen and it looks pretty cool imo:

I would feel the same way if he bought the restaurant while it was still open. It was an interesting space. But it's been abandoned for years and is a blight on the area.

Curbed Austin has an article and rendering of that Jovitas project.

Old Jovita’s spot owned by filmmaker Robert Rodriguez to become apartments
Four-story building with ground-floor retail

By Cindy Widner@CurbedAustin Jul 22, 2019, 11:21

The South First Street property that was home to the wildly popular (and now infamous) restaurant and bar Jovita’s will be developed for a four-story, multifamily building, the Austin Business Journal reported Thursday.

Jovita’s, which opened in 1992, was a Tex-Mex and live-music mainstay on South First Street that first became well-known for hosting country music legend Don Walser’s weekly gigs. It closed in 2012 after federal law enforcement raided the establishment to bust a heroin ring, the Austin American-Statesman reported. Owner Amado “Mayo” Pardo died before his trial in 2013, leaving the property ownership in question.

3-story townhome development for 4511 Vinson Drive in South Austin.

This is going in on a vacant lot right along the railroad tracks between Philco Drive and St. Elmo Road.

I wonder if this means Vinson will finally get a bike lane extension? There are bike lanes just south of there where Vinson turns into Emerald Forrest Drive. This is actually my preferred bike route into downtown from my neighborhood.

Just browsing the permit site.

Porsche of Austin going in just up the road from Ferrari in the old Nissan Pre-Owned dealership. South Austin getting fancy. BMW, Ferrari and now Porsche all within half a mile.

I would expect the Lambo dealership to likewise move shortly. It's in the old Ferrari dealership on North Lamar and is likely not big enough.

My sister works at one of the residential buildings in downtown, and she says there are some wild cars in there. There's one guy she said who stores about 20 of his cars in the garage of the building. She said the least nice one is a Mercedes. The rest are Astin Martins, Lambos, and Ferraris.

Having COTA and a sizable wealthy population are big reasons.

J that is a good point, COTA helps a lot I bet and of course the wealthy. I think the bigger cities in Texas don’t think we have the wealth. The only reason I say that is because when I told a friend in Dallas how big our restoration hardware was they seemed surprised by it. He even said I am surprised you even have a RH?
