More trains to be possible
Metro-North adding signals, sidings for 2-way traffic on Waterbury line
BY ANDREW LARSON REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN
Sunday, August 2, 2015 11:05 AM EDT

WATERBURY — Riders clamoring for more frequent service on the Waterbury Branch of Metro-North Railroad will get what they've been wanting for more than decade: passing sidings.

The state Department of Transportation has begun a project to signalize the single-track rail line, which runs from Bridgeport to Waterbury. As part of the project, the state plans to build passing sidings in Devon, Derby, Beacon Falls and Waterbury.

The branch is scheduled to be fully signalized by December 2018. The passing sidings will also be installed by then, allowing two-way train traffic to commence.

The upgrade will enable Metro-North to run trains between Bridgeport and Waterbury more frequently than once every two-and-a-half hours.

The state Department of Transportation is building passing sidings in Derby, about 500 yards north of the train station. The sidings are part of a signalization project that will allow two-way train traffic on the Waterbury branch by December, 2018.

Metro-North's New Haven Line Breaks Ridership Record

NEW HAVEN — With a 1.6 percent gain over 2013, Metro-North's New Haven line carried more riders in 2014 than in any year of its history, the railroad reported Monday.

Fairfield County riders going to Manhattan jobs are still the largest single piece of the customer base, but the growth is coming from Connecticut and Westchester County, N.Y., workers commuting to jobs in Stamford, Norwalk and Greenwich, along with off-peak riders to New York City.

I don't demand anything from the branch right now, although I do know people that would benefit from it being extended to Torrington. Personally, I would like to see service extended along the Highland branch through Bristol to Hartford. I recognize that many things have to come first though, such as the signalling and siding projects which are now underway. There's also the issue of the busway which ate the tracks from New Britain to Newington, requiring a diversion down to Kensington Junction. Not exactly an appealing routing.

I just go to take notes.

Went to the Waterbury Branch forum tonight. The big news is that in addition to the signalization project, the sidings are funded thanks to $2.8 billion allocation from the state sales tax. In roughly 6 weeks, or whenever the Stamford track work is completed, crews will start working on the Derby siding, the turnouts for which were installed earlier this year when the track was out of service for a crossing upgrade. Unfortunately, the sidings won't be of any use until the signalization is completed in 2018. Shame that the extra money couldn't accelerate the signals.

Also, it was mentioned that the Walk bridge is being replaced using accelerated bridge construction, so service interruption should be minimal until the new movable spans are moved into place.
