Idaho was the fastest growing state (in % terms) between 7/1/2020-7/1/2021. The state's population grew by 2.9%

https://www.census.gov/newsroom/pres...estimates.html

https://www.census.gov/data/tables/t...age_1574439295

Only a few years ago, Idaho passed West Virginia to become the 38th most-populous state. If current annual growth rates continue, Idaho will pass Nebraska in 2 years (2023) to become the 37th most-populous state. 2 years after that, in 2025, Idaho will pass New Mexico to become the 36th most-populous state. From there, it will take another ~12 years to catch Kansas, which is just shy of 3 million residents.

it's probably likely at this point that the Boise CSA will top one million by the 2030 census.

Which, from somebody born and raised in Boise, is absolutely insane to think about.

It blows my mind to think about the change/growth here. Just a quick example: When I went to Lowell Scott Middle school in the early 90s, there was nothing out there. Nothing but fields. Now it's in the middle of urban growth and on one of the busiest roads in the valley.

I always tell my daughter that, though we are both from Boise, we grew up in two entirely different cities.

when I moved to Boise, the population of the entire valley was ~350,000. funny how it's now almost 3x that.

a real estate agent gave me a tour of the area. i wanted to live in the central or east part of town, but for some reason she drove me out to eagle road, which at the time was a pothole-pocketed two-lane farm road with nothing around it. she had to point out Boise on the eastern horizon and Meridian to the west. I didn't want to live in the middle of nowhere.

so yeah, things changed.

It isn't very accurate to extrapolate 1 year growth rates but it is fun so I am going to do it anyway...here are population estimates in 5 years (2026) using population growth between 2020-2021:

2026 city population projections
1. Boise 245,570
2. Meridian 162,375
3. Nampa 135,585
4. Caldwell 81,982
5. Idaho Falls 73,461
6. Post Falls 64,571
7. Coeur d'Alene 61,933
8. Pocatello 61,320
9. Twin Falls 60,793
10. Kuna 40,345
11. Eagle 38,734
12. Rexburg 37,393
13. Lewiston 35,792
14. Moscow 27,860
15. Ammon 23,257
16. Hayden 19,333
17. Mountain Home 16,850
18. Chubbuck 16,492

Observations:
---Caldwell has been on pace to pass Idaho Falls as the 4th largest city in the state. This would mean the top 4 largest cities would all be in the Treasure Valley. Using last year's growth rate, this will happen in just two years (2023). In reality, I don't see this happening for three or four years.
---Post Falls has been on pace to pass Coeur d'Alene in population for a while now. Using last year's growth rate, this will happen in five years (2026). In reality, I am guessing it will not happen until 2029 or 2030.
