Well guys, since I know a lot of you here are budding architects or at the very least very serious armchair architecutre critics I thought it might be interesting to see what you can come up with for this project. I'll lay out some ground rules in terms of design and those who want to participate are free to either write, give examples or preferably draw their ideas.

As a little incentive if anything is truly great and feasible it may find its way into the final design

The Building must:

• Maintain the current structure
• Allow for mixed use (ie retail on bottom, hotel/office etc on top)
• Be mindful of its neighbours
• Be somewhat conservative, due to the likely tenants
• Work within a realistic budget!!

The renderings are not yet public, and likely won't be until the project moves to approval stages, although given its Nov 1st start date that should be expedited form the normal timeline for a project of this size.

I'm not talking functionally conservative, I'm taking aesthetically. If you look at the list of rumoured tenants here and their other stores you would see that they prefer a more simple elegant look than a more daring look.

Doesn't mean you still cant have fun or create a beautiful building, just needs to be a little more toned down than some of the architecture that gets posted in the designs to inspire Vancouver thread.

And hey this is a public thread, you can do whatever you like! All im saying is that in order to propose something that is more palpable it would be wise to err on the side of conservative.

yes, but this is also a building located at potentially the most prominent intersection of our primary entertainment district, so would it not make sense to have some "daring" (for Vancouver, not other cities around the world) lighting / sign / screen features along its Granville and potentially Robson facades?

I have seen many high end department stores / retailers do just that throughout Europe and Asia.

Well sure I don't see anything wrong with that. I was merely trying to sway people from suggesting some of the more outlandish things we see on this site sometimes, the neon pink pickles and the coruscant rejects etc...

Having once stayed a few days at the st. Moritz hotel in NY, I noticed that on the "dining room/bar" side of the hotel, which faces directly onto Sixth Ave with its fleets of taxis and traffic, the entire effect of that for the interior was elegantly mitigated with the use of stained glass windows, using (presumably fairly thick) glass which was bevelled at the design joints in the window.

Now I'm not saying , do that here, do that to this project. Not at all. I'm simply reflecting on the use of window glass at street level with a busy street (such as Howe St) facing onto it..... Just an idea. I doubt I'll ever see that here.

Interesting... that's not too far off what is being worked on right now, although it is more the shape of the existing but with those types of solar shades and glazing.

If they aren't changing the shape, the obvious change would be to add depth and texture.
