Mr. Cotton said that a consortium of four foreign carriers — Lufthansa, Air France, Japan Airlines and Korean Airlines — had pledged to spend $7 billion to replace Terminals 1 and 2 with a massive terminal containing 23 gates and 230,000 square feet of stores and restaurants. He said that the complex would be operated by Munich Airport International and would be connected to Terminal 4, integrating the south side of the airport.

Wow, wow! Lots of change! I can see that. No more T2, T3, T7. The old Delta T2 will be demolished. It's very old terminal. This is where the old Pan Am terminal used to be.

Wtf are these renderings? Are they building an airport or a circus? It looks so cheesy.

Are these photos inspiration or final renderings?

T3 was the old Pan Am terminal, and has been demolished. T2 is another older terminal (soon to be demolished) that now handles Delta's flights out West.

30 years too late, but thank God this is finally happening. I especially like the news that all the terminals will now be connected by foot, and that Airtrain will have additional capacity, including options for one-seat ride to Manhattan.

Once these new terminals are built, JFK will be down to five terminals and the oldest will be from 2003.

First impression as well.

But realistically most of that garish branding stuff won't actually make it into the final product. Those awful JFK globe things look like something you's see in Uzbekistan or something.

Exactly. I just ask myself - is this on the same level of architecture quality as the TWA building....no

as probably a rare someone who has been to three different airports in uzbekistan i can tell you the airports there are a lot less garish. in fact they are rather pleasant and not garish at all. no giant globe thingys!

$13 Billion Terminal Redevelopment Plan Unveiled For JFK International Airport

The ambitious plan includes the replacement of terminals 1, 2, and 7 with conglomerated North and South terminals to help simplify and improve the traveler experience. Consolidated areas will also be able to accommodate more visitors, larger aircraft, and include more accessible areas for disabled and elderly travelers. Travelers who commute using public transportation will have access to larger and more frequent AirTrain shuttles.

New renderings, revealed by Curbed, give a first look of interior green spaces, New York-centric installations, and windowed ceiling enclosures that promote the flow of natural light. The master planning team is being led by Mott MacDonald and Grimshaw Architects.

More than 90% of the project cost will be funded by airliners who use the airport. The South terminal will reportedly be funded by Air France, Japan Airlines, Korean Air Lines, and Lufthansa. Jet Blue, alone, will fund development of the North terminal. A small portion of of the cost will be funded by taxpayers for new roads, overpasses, and infrastructure to accommodate a great increase in traffic.

Construction is expected to begin by 2020 with completion by 2025.

I don't want to complain but does anyone else feel the architecture is, for a lack of a better word, a bit generic?

Meh it looks fine. The lack of new airfield capacity and improved transit to the airport is more troubling to me. If you're going to spend billions then core functions of transportation should be addressed if they are constrained.

In the end it seems like JFK travelers will just have fancier places to wait.

Agreed 100%. Even if there is no firm plan in place they ought to be constructing a subterranean station shell and access tunnel out towards the west as part of this rebuilding project is done. That way when LIRR, the PA or whatever it will be is serious about getting a nonstop airport express from Penn, or even more ambitious a super express to lower Manhattan via Atlantic Ave and a branch from TriboroRX, the terminal is there awaiting it. The same is true for LGA where they should at least be preparing a raw space under the complex for subterranean N/W or LIRR connection from the west. The AirTrain is a shortsighted politically expedient band-aid that will never live up to other better operational solutions.
