Those are great shots! Lucky you got a nice clear day. I have a nice downtown view from my office out on 360 but it's almost always very hazy.

I was going through old photos I took and came across this one. It was taken summer of '11 from on top of a bench at Zilker Botanical Garden.

^That's cool. I haven't seen that view in a long time. I need to get back up there again.

Can't really tell if the lightning hit the crown or if it is some distance to the east with the Frost covering where it struck.

It hit the crown, you can tell by where the bolt gets brighter towards the base. If it had hit behind, you wouldn't see the brightest part because it be closer to the ground. Also notice the angle of the bolt where it curves directly towards the top of Frost.

I took some photos from the Zilker Clubhouse on Tuesday since I was in that neighborhood.

I think my favorite is the one that shows all the people on the soccer fields with the buildings on Barton Springs Rd in the background.

I'm loving these photos from the Zilker Park Clubhouse. I tried to go up there a few weekends ago, but the iron gates to the parking lot and clubhouse were locked, and since there are signs all up and down that narrow road leading to the clubhouse saying you can't park on the road, I just left. The sign on the iron gate said CLOSED and there was something about contacting the city if you wanted to hold an event there.

Is it open to the general public again, or did you just happen to luck out and it was open because someone was preparing for an event?

Somehow all the times I've gone up there the gates have been open. I usually ride up there on my bike when I'm out for photos. That day, though, we were driving around in that neighborhood on an errand and stopped. There was a car in the lot next to the building. I had to run in to use the restroom, and I didn't see anyone there. I just went out on the patio area for photos.

The best one is definitely the one with the birds. I mean they're all great but that one reminds me of the last botg where all the bats were so active... Very Austin!

More like '70ish. Are you not counting that fabulous Holiday Inn down by the river?

I always liked the Enron complex in Houston. I was thinking something like that would add nicely to the skyline...no angles, no box, no rectangle, just curves covered in reflective glass 40 to 50 stories. I don't mind the roundish Holiday Inn, but it lacks the height and grace of what the former Enron, now owned by Chevron and known as 1400 Smith St, would bring to the skyline. I think a real signature tower for Austin, if we ever get one, should be similar to Enron, perhaps 50 to 60 stories instead of 40, and in the mix of our taller towers to break up the angles and color pallet. I miss the gold Chase Tower.
I also like the Wells Fargo tower in Houston. If only Austin could land a building like that...

Speaking of round towers...

1 Blight Street in Sydney is pretty neat: http://www.archiscene.net/wp-content...et-arup-01.jpg

I'm not really a fan of round towers unless they're being designed that way out of necessity such as along a creek or curved roadway or to avoid a capitol view corridor. Otherwise just having a round tower for the sake of having one seems like a waste of land. I guess that might seem nit picky, but a round tower obviously couldn't meet a street along a square block. So it would have poor street interaction. It would pretty much mean it would have to have a plaza. And in the new urbanism design standard, plazas equal bad. Of course I guess a building could have a podium that meets the street with a curved tower above it. That way the retail area would still meet the street leaving the tower free to be designed with whatever shape they wanted.

Both towers I mentioned are not completely round and I agree with you Kevin, but take a look at the two if you get a chance and perhaps reasses.

The podium idea is what I was thinking too, Kevin. A couple stories of retail and operations. Then an elliptical tower up from there. I prefer the look of an oblong tower rather than a round one.
