TASHKENT Capital of Uzbekistan

I've found this photographer, Christopher Herwig, on Flickr who takes amazing photos of interesting places - and writes great captions to the photos. Too good not to post at SSP!

Wikipedia:
Quote:
Tashkent (Uzbek: Toshkent, Тошкент, Russian: Ташкент) is the capital of Uzbekistan and also of the Tashkent Province. The officially registered population of the city in 2006 was 2.1 million. According to unofficial data, the population is more than 3 million.
Quote:
On April 26 1966, Tashkent was destroyed by a huge earthquake (7.5 on the Richter scale) and over 300,000 were left homeless. At the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Tashkent was the fourth largest city in the country and a center of learning in the science and engineering fields. Tashkent was a very Soviet city, with few reminders of its position on the Silk Road or its 2000+ years of history. At the moment, it is the most cosmopolitan city in Uzbekistan, with large ethnic Russian minority. The city is noted for its tree lined streets, numerous fountains, and pleasant parks.

ARKIV 050315 - Most of the city was destroyed in an earthquake in 1966, and as a result much of the cities architecture dates back to the late 60's.

Interesting topic!
The mosaic patterns do look very nice and very original.
I am wondering is there a typical Uzbeki face cause I see two different kind of faces of people , a little Asian and kind of Iranian.

And some people in the photo are obviously Russians. This is what Wikipedia says about the population of Uzbekistan:

Quote:
According to official sources, Uzbeks comprise a majority (80%) of the total population. Other ethnic groups include Russians 5.5%, Tajiks 5%, Kazakhs 3%, Karakalpaks 2.5%, and Tatars 1.5%
What I understand are Tajiks of Iranian origin and speak persian, while Uzbeks, Kazakhs and Tajiks are turkic ethnic groups. Some people in this thread have a slightly mongolic look I think.
