For the first time in about 50 years, I drove through West Campus the other day and was totally shocked to see the unbelievable changes. I had no idea where I was!
Can anyone do a set of drone shots of that area, or video?

With the increased number of students living in West Campus, the amount of foot traffic that can now be seen on Guadalupe is astounding. It is sometimes reminiscent of Manhattan sidewalks.

I've been wanting to see some myself. Maybe AusTxDevelopment could do some? West Campus and UT both for that matter.

Reality is development has pushed out to the east and to an extent west. Plaza Saltillo.. err uh I mean the Saltillo development or just plain Saltillo. Hate it when they have to change the name... but I digress.. along with all the other midrise construction east of 35. As far as highrise development, South Shore Central is the first outward expansion from the CBD and I think that will for a time alleviate the need to build tall east or west aside from what is already there or planned. Once South Shore Central fills in then the push to the east and west will start in ernest.

And I totally forgot about the playground. They are going to be doing some serious excavating. That area will be completely transformed but it looks awesome. I hope they either fix the fountain or upgrade it to something larger that won't get clogged up. They don't even light it anymore, its pathetic. This is why we can't have nice things lol

I'll try in the next couple of weeks to get some pictures of that area. I can't fly in the rain, unfortunately. I think there are some other drone pilots on here, so hopefully we'll have some pictures sooner rather than later.

I have been trying to get flying since new years. I crashed my drone on news years eve. Finally repaired the shell and now after 3 test flights the battery will not fit in. What luck? West campus is very do able. How ever there might be some legality if UT is in the picture. East Austin you have to stay west of IH35 or north of MLK unless you get an FAA waiver.

I guess it depends on the brand of drone you fly. I have a DJI drone, and for Austin the authorization zones - which require FAA waivers - don't start until Roy Guerrero Park/Montopolis area as you get close to the airport. UT is unrestricted, but you can't fly directly over the stadium without permission. Of course the capitol, jails, military bases (Mabry) and courthouses are restricted. As for taking pictures to sell, there might be some UT trademark issues involved but that's not what I use my drone for.

You can see where it's okay to fly a DJI drone on their Fly Safe Geo Zone Map by clicking on the link and searching for "Austin, TX" https://www.dji.com/flysafe/geo-map

I moved out of west campus in 2015. Just driving through 4 years later I am shocked at all the changes.

If AISD ever needs to market House Field, they should use that last photo. Fantastic shots!

If they ever do that, I'll move back to Austin and chain myself to the score board to prevent it being sold and redeveloped. That's an Austin icon.

I was thinking for athletic events. I'd protest redeveloping the stadium too (but with the floodplain I doubt it ever will)

Riverranchdrone, one of your excellent photos was used for the Jones Energy story on the Statesman's website. Great job! (I hope they paid you for it).

Great catch. They never did contact me. Lucky they didnt edit my name off of the picture because there is no credit in the story.
