From several things that I've read, a lot of celebrities used to congregate in there on one occasion or another. (Like Montgomery Clift, for one.) You'd think someone might have photographed the front of it -- "That's where I saw so and so...!"

Sorry, I steered you wrong. It was located in the 1909 CALIFORNIA, HISTORY OF THE BENCH AND BAR OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. I found it through an Ancestry.com search for Horace Hilary Appel.

I can't post at all but if someone else can get into Ancestry, search the full name and then find the publication, maybe you can figure out how to save it so it will post.

I don't have access to Ancestry.com, but "History of the Bench and Bar of Southern California" (1909) is a free e-book on google. HHA, Sr appears on page 125. Piece of cake.

I'm not sure about a family resemblance. Sorry Tovangar but I may have discarded the old photo of son Horace. I have thousands of photos and they really get out of control...plus many of them I have no idea who they are.

Right there with you CBD. I keep meaning to scan mine, but there's so many it would take the rest of my life to do a proper job. Only a few generations ago people had just a hand-full of photos of friends and family. Sometimes I envy them. Like the Total Information Awareness program, too much information can be the same as none at all.

Does anyone know the purpose of the white markings (and numbers) on the utility pole?

That's an end pole (notice the guy-wires). The info on the pole was probably useful to LADWP workers (as to exactly where they were on the grid etc).

That's not "the Courthouse". Those pix (#2, #3, #4, #6 & #7) are City Hall :-)

I'm not sure why, but this photo of Union Station conjured up a strong (and welcome) memory of the way cars' wool-flannel headliners smelled back in the day. Thank you.

Yes, and the numbers could be pole or circuit numbers. Back in the day, I interned in Anaheim's Public Utilities Department and they gave their grid circuits women's' names, like Juliet and Kathleen. So if someone said "Juliet 151 is down", you'd instantly known within a block or two where the problem was. Now I'm sure they use GPS.

We were there to see friends off back to Albuquerque on the Amtrak Southwest Chief. Union Station is a happening place now. It was in serious decline back in the 80's I used to see it quite often as a kid in the late 70's up to the mid-80's when my grandmother used to go to the main terminal annex post office across the street.

Utility poles have numbers to quickly find them should there be a problem.

Hollywood High jalopies. I can't tell what the lead car is- some Plymouth or Dodge. The other one is a 1930 Ford (Model A) standard roadster. No top? no problem (it never rains in LA). I wonder if the two fellows dashing up the stairs are the drivers, and if they went on to fly bombers.

It could be the set of an Andy Hardy film.

Notice a mall parking lot before the 1960s. Most of the car windows are open and the doors obviously unlocked. Unimaginable in 2015.
The US is a very different place since Nov 22, 1963...in fact it no longer exists.
