I agree that Fredericton is quite charming. It's both bucolic and quite well endowed for a city it's size simultaneously. An interesting "down home" mix.
The sad thing about Freddy is that it is stuck in the middle of nowhere. From Woodstock to Fredericton is a one hour drive on the TCH through densely forested land. After Freddy, it's another 90 minute drive through NB's nether regions to Moncton. There are only
two exits to Fredericton from the TCH, and you can't see the city from either exit. If you aren't paying attention, you could bypass the city without even knowing that it was there....
The new four lane TCH from Moncton to Woodstock is a great road, but the designers placed the right of way through the wilderness. It would have been better if the highway were closer to the Saint John River west of Freddy and if it had followed a more southerly alignment towards Sussex east of the capital. At least that way you might form the impression that there are actual living human beings resident in the province (in addition to the moose).
NB was a "drive through" province before. It's even worse now!!! You can cross the province on the highway and think no one actually lives here. This is the worst impression you could possibly give a tourist.......
