As of two weeks ago I became Canmore's newest resident and thought it was about time for Canmore to get its own permanent/on-going thread. I will be updating it regularly.

Lowest elevation: 1,375 m (4,511 ft)

This is a special place and certainly very different in look/feel than its beautiful neighbour Banff. An hour west of Calgary it is very popular with many Albertans for recreational or part-time homes. It's main resource/industry is outdoor activities and tourism.

It is famous for hosting the 1988 Olympics Nordic events (among other duties) and is 35mins from Nakiska, 20-Norquay, 35-Sunshine and 50 from Lake Louise ski hills.

Canmore has really 'grown up' in the last 5-10 years, with a lot of new investment, expansion and with it many more food/bev options.

There are multiple micro-ish- breweries and even a distillery here.


A rich and lengthy mining (mostly coal) history rests here.


The TransCanada Highway #1 bisects the town and creates two distinct sides, along with various hillside enclaves.

Three Sisters Mountain Village - Two ASPs

The current public hearing (going onto day 5) has been record setting in terms of duration and number of speakings/written submissions.

'The total population for Three Sisters Village is estimated to be 5,800 to 10,000. Please note, this represents a maximum occupancy for all potential hotels and visitor accommodation. The total population for Smith Creek is estimated at 2,200 to 4,500. '

Canmore council hears from public on proposed Three Sisters development

The marathon public hearing on the proposed Three Sisters Village and Smith Creek area structure plans continued into a sixth day of delegations.

CANMORE – The marathon public hearing on the proposed Three Sisters Village and Smith Creek area structure plans continued into a sixth day of delegations on Wednesday (March 17).

The polarizing public hearing highlighted community members concerns about undermining, financial implications, climate change and the possible impact on wildlife associated with the proposed development.

While the hearing brought significantly more opposition than those in favour, many people brought up issues on the shortage and cost of housing that could be addressed by new development.

The delegation portion lasted about a combined 44 hours. People were able to speak for a maximum of 10 minutes – five minutes for each of the ASPs – and more than 200 used the opportunity.

The Town also received more than 1,200 written submissions, with more eligible to be submitted until March 23. The meetings also garnered significantly more viewers than the average council session, varying between 1,500 to 5,100 people who had watched at least part of it.

Very beautiful, it looks like a gem of a place! The company I work for has done decent amount of work in Canmore so I knew about it but didn't know much. It definitely seems different than Banff, it's like wild west rustic plus a tourist resort town, interesting combo

Amenities look great for such a small town. Not to mention the natural beauty is unreal.

Its funny, I feel that small town's have stepped their game up so much in the last decade.

A lot of energy, a lot quality infrastructure, but not a ton of people.

Great mix.

14000 is nothing to sneeze at though and that basically doubles on weekends.

I had no idea Canmore was more than the strip along the hwy. Driven past so many times. Next trip to Calgary I'll be checking it out.

^it has changed a lot in the last decade or so and is really coming into its own.

There's almost two different kinds of Canmore, bisected by the rail line.

It's essentially Banff Lite.

Or for many people... specifically not Banff...

Canmore really prides itself on being more of a lifestyle/outdoor town versus what is offered in Banff.

Both important and both with merit.
